Fun Story: My director kept telling me and my tenor sax buddy to play softer. No matter what we did, it wasn’t soft enough for him. So getting frustrated, I told my buddy “Dont play this time. Just fake it”

Our Band Director then informed us we sounded perfect.

To my readers: “p” means quiet, “pp” means really quiet. I’ve never seen “pppp” before haha.

On the contrast, “f” means loud, and “ffff” probably means so loud you go unconscious.

I had ffff in a piece once and my conductor told me to play as loudly as physically possible without falling off my chair…

Me and my trombone buddies had “ffff” and he sat next to me and played so hard that he fell out of his chair.

The lengths we go for music.

Okay yeah so I play the bass clarinet and the amount of air you have to move and the stiffness of the reed means it only has two settings and that is loud and louder, with an optional LOUDEST that includes a 50% probability of HORRIBLE CROAKING NOISE which is the bass equivalent of the ubiquitous clarinet shriek.

One day, when I was in concert band in high school, we got a new piece handed out for the first time, and there was a strange little commotion back in the tuba section — whispering, and pointing at something in the music, and swatting at each other’s hands all shhh don’t call attention to it. And although they did attract the attention of basically everyone else in the band, they managed to avoid being noticed by the band director, who gave us a few minutes to look over our parts and then said, “All right, let’s run through it up to section A.”

And here we are, cheerfully playing along, sounding reasonably competent — but everyone, when they have the attention to spare, is keeping an eye on the tuba players. They don’t come in for the first eight measures or so, and then when they do come in, what we see is:

[stifled giggling]

[reeeeeeally deep breath]

[COLOSSAL FOGHORN NOISE]

The entire band stops dead, in the cacophonous kind of way that a band stops when it hasn’t actually been cued to stop. The band director doesn’t even say anything, just looks straight back at the tubas and makes a helpless sort of why gesture.

In unison, the tuba players defend themselves: “THERE WERE FOUR F’S.”

FFFF is not really a rational dynamic marking for any instrument, but for the love of all that is holy why would you put it in a tuba part.

This is the best band post

Everyone else go home

Oh man, so I play trombone, and we got this piece called Florentiner Marsch by Julius Fucik, and we saw this

image

which is 8 fortes. We were shocked until,

image

that is 24 fortes who the fuck does that

Who does that?

This guy. Take a good look – that is the moustache of a man with nothing to lose.

Julius IdontgivaFucik

More like Julius Fuckit

Pyrozod’s tags for this were too hilarious not to share

I haven’t been in band for years but this made me laugh so hard

I haven’t seen this post in ages and I’m dying of laughter

I didn’t think it could get better after The Foghorn Tuba Story, but it did. It got better. Bless you, MusicTumblr.

as far as I can translate it, the German notes at the octuple forte mean something roughly like “You want the instrument to cough… this is not for wimps”

this man was a menace

Yeah I need to join another brass band

Getting Tuba feels.

When I was in high school I played the flute and piccolo.  One day the director hands out a new song to us, and I was the ONLY piccolo player.  For those not familiar with this particular instrument: google it.  It sounds like a banshee but worse.  I wore EARPLUGS because of this.

The sheet I was given at 10 Fs.  TEN!!!  I must have had a strange look on my face because a flute player asked if I’m okay.  So I pointed at the section with the Fs.  She proceeded to tear a tissue apart and stuff the pieces in her ears, all the while with this shit eating grin on her face.

When we get to this particular part of the song I decide to just go with it.  The composer must have been evil or deaf, maybe both, but the sound that came out of my piccolo isn’t something meant for humans to hear.  It made EVERYONE in the room stop playing, a few dropping of them looking like they’re in pain (which they likely were).  The director asks me “what the hell was that?”  So I handed him the sheet and pointed out there are several sections with this absurd requirement.

The flute player who had stuffed the tissues in her ears was laughing really hard.

Anyone else find it SUPER weird that Peter Pettigrew goes by Wormtail amongst the Deatheaters and Voldemort?

Like… It’s the nickname that he used along with his best friends- 2/3 of which he betrayed- 1 of which he lead to the death of, 2nd of which he framed for that betrayal (and technically is responsible for his death- because Voldemort wouldn’t have been able to do visions for Harry without his power/body back.)

I always thought it was to remind Wormtail of his betrayal of the people who actually cared about him.

Still miffed over here that they had Ron MISS the quaffle on the Forbidden Journey.

It would not have been hard at all to let him be the amazing Quidditch Keeper we all know he is.

I could be wrong but I always take it as he missed it because he was starting to notice the dementors before everyone else and was figuring out how to best warn us plus Harry.

Whoa. Look at the optimist over here with their half full cup! I salute you! (and I fully intend to channel that whole ‘Ron is more observant than everyone else’ vibe when I go back in 10 days.)

NATIONWIDE TRACTION, PLEASE!

Keep up the energy. Inspire the youth vote.

VOTE LIKE YOUR FUTURE DEPENDED ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES!

❤ ALL OF THIS ❤

Get out and vote regardless of whether it seems like its a “Sure thing” or seems “Hopeless”…there’s no such thing as a sure thing and there is always ALWAYS a chance that your vote can make a difference no matter how hopeless it might seem…

Just to be clear: I dislike the Democrats. I don’t feel that they reflect my values, and I find them mostly ineffectual.

BUT

The Republican party is a complete dumpster fire right now. I’m voting to keep white supremacists, transphobes, social Darwinists, and fascists out of places of power. I’m voting like lives depend on it, because they literally do.

I don’t like the Democrats, but you can be damned sure I’m voting for them this week, every chance I get. You should too.

If you don’t believe the midterm elections are important, since Trump is still in office:

Remember near the end of Obama’s presidency, when people were complaining that he couldn’t get anything done because congress was standing in his way, blocking his nominees and keeping his goals from turning into legislation?

That’s because in the 2014 midterm elections, Republicans gained control of the Senate, and as a result held both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Obama was still president. But Republicans had congress, and that gave them power.

Imagine if every time Trump wanted to put out a new travel ban, or give ICE more power to go after families, or roll back environmental protections, or protections for trans people against discrimination, he had to face the level of resistance in congress that Obama did.

Whether a democratic congress would oppose Trump out of principles or simply out of partisanship, they would make life harder for him.

If you are angry about the Trump administration you can take a lot of power away from him by voting Democrat in the midterm elections tomorrow.

hey followers I’m sick af but I’m sure as shit going to drag myself out to vote democrat tomorrow and you all need to, too

Vote because you want to prevent increasing violence, vote to protect people who need to be protected, vote out of sheer unmitigated spite. Whatever your reasons, JUST VOTE.

for those who don’t want to read this,

JUST

FUCKING

VOTE

TO

GIVE

TRUMP

HELL

Something I found that makes a scene easier and longer:

Writing the dialogue first.

I never used to do this, but one night it was really late and I was half asleep but I wanted to get some work done. So I decided to just fill in the dialogue I wanted for the scene.

I found myself with close to 1000 words of dialogue. (I obviously tagged who said what, how it was said, etc.)

When I came back to the document, I just filled in the action, the background, descriptions and plot.

I ended up with between 3000-4000 words in one sitting.

Maybe this won’t work for everyone, hell maybe someone else has already pointed this out, but I just wanted to share this writing tip.

I’ve done this! It totally works.

A lot of times, my scenes come to me in fully formed dialogue first. I’ve started getting into the habit of furiously writing it all down, whether it’s in a word doc, a notebook, or the notes section on my phone. Honestly, it’s seriously saved my life doing it and I think it’s also helped me create some of my better work as well

Other cartoons that the publisher refused to print before firing Rogers:

A political cartoonist who had satirized every President during his 25 years at the paper is fired for drawing Trump cartoons.

“This is precisely the time,” Pittsburgh mayor Bill Peduto (often the target of Rogers’ cartoons) said, “when the constitutionally protected free press – including critics like Rob Rogers – should be celebrated and supported, and not fired for doing their jobs. This decision, just one day after Trump labeled the news media is ‘our country’s biggest enemy.’“

Y’know, like dictators always do under fascist regimes.
