Do you ever think about how when Ron’s wand broke 2nd year, just using spell-o-tape wasn’t enough to fix it. It kept backfiring in ways that were really bad, like making himself eat slugs, or kinda just. being defective in general.

Hagrid’s wand was snapped his 3rd year. But he still uses it, disguised as an umbrella. And it works.

Like we know Ollivander didn’t fix it, since he was surprised to hear Hagrid had the pieces. Not to mention since Hagrid was expelled, it would be extremely illegal to fix it. Hogwarts works as a groundskeeper, and lives in a one room wooden hut that he made himself. He’s not going to have the money to ribe someone to fix it, and then there’s also the fact that because of his heritage, even if he could bribe someone to fix it, they probably wouldn’t. And sure, Dumbledore probably knows that Hagrid fixed his wand, there’s a certain level of deniability there. He wouldn’t have actually gotten involved with the wand mending process. Especially when Hagrid was just accused of killing a student.

So that means Hagrid would have put his wand back together himself.

The 3rd year transfiguration examination was to turn a teapot into a tortoise. Only inanimate objects into animals. Part of the reason animagi are so rare is because they’re human to animal transformations. The first time we meet Hagrid, he gives Dudley a tail, and correctly animates the boat he and Harry are on. Silently.

Harry and co. didn’t even attempt to learn silent casting until 6th year. Anything Hagrid learned after 3rd year would have been self taught.

GET READY FOR MY THEORY PEOPLE YOU’RE IN FOR A LONG RIDE!!

First of all @randomthingsthatilike123 the nonverbal stuff is INSANELY COOL, and I’ve never thought about that before in all of my read throughs!

But I actually think Hagrid’s umbrella wand paints a different picture for the reader. I always thought that Dumbledore actually was the one to fix Hagrid’s wand, rather than Hagrid himself. This was actually one of the first clues we were given that Dumbledore had the Elder Wand before we even knew what it was. Hear me out…

Ron fixes his broken wand with Spell-O-Tape, and he frequently mentions that there is no other way to mend it otherwise. Yet, he continues to use it beyond its abilities. He puts himself (and others I guess) in danger because he is worried about repercussions for asking for a new wand from his parents. While most would see this as a reason to love Ron more for his sensitivity, I initially read into this as Ron desiring a stronger connection to a wand that is HIS OWN, a wand that CHOSE HIM. After all, he went to Hogwarts with a hand-me-down wand from one of his older brothers (Charlie, I think…).

Flashforward to Deathly Hallows. We learn about the Elder Wand and it’s superior ability. We learn about its original and extremely dark history. We also learn from this that Dumbledore was the last known owner. While this seems separate from Hagrid, I swear it’s not. In the middle of the book, Harry’s wand has broken beyond repair. We experience his pain and sorrow from losing what felt like an extension of himself. We get a more clear picture of what Ron and even Hagrid experienced years before.

In the end, Harry uses the Elder Wand to mend his old holly wand. We are clearly shown the immense power that this wand possesses, to the point that it can do magic that was previously described to be IMPOSSIBLE. We are privately exposed to the fact that wands CAN be mended, if the Elder Wand and it’s proper owner are the ones doing the mending.

Flashback to Hagrid being expelled. Dumbledore, the current owner of the Elder Wand, knows that Hagrid is innocent. He convinces officials to let Hagrid stay out of prison, and allows him to remain as game-keeper at Hogwarts. As a final peace offering, attempting to give poor Hagrid a semblance of the life he was so woefully denied, Dumbledore secretly uses the Elder Wand to create the umbrella for Hagrid. This is the first time we are exposed to wands being mended, the ONLY OTHER TIME we are told as the audience that wands can break, and still work like normal.

Ron’s Spell-O-Tape Wand is a prime example of what every other wizard experiences when their wand breaks: there is no hope. Finally, to connect Ron to this puzzle a little bit more, when the trio are sharing which Hallow they would choose, Ron picks the wand. While it is implied that he does so because he feels as if he is always second to Harry, not as powerful, and not even as loved as him, I see a different picture. This forms a larger clue into the fact that he desires not only power and better magic, but a stronger wizard-wand connection that he has lacked in the past. He was denied a wand of his own for too long, and even after getting a new wand he still felt powerless. The Elder Wand would not only give him recognition, but a bonded connection that he was denied.
