…We should tell them to get out. We don’t want any more Dobbys, do we? We can’t order them to die for us.

Deathly Hallows, Ch. 31

This is a fantastic character moment for Ron, who has always been deliberately written as a little bit of a casual magical-equivalent racist toward beings that most of the wizarding world considers inferior – in the past, he never questioned that house-elves should be subservient, and the first thing he said when he found out Lupin was a werewolf was “Don’t touch me, werewolf.” In the same vein, he assumed right away that all giants were brutal monsters. By giving him those views, Rowling made it clear that a person doesn’t have to be outwardly on the side of evil to be racist, and also that being a good guy doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t. In thinking of the house-elves in this way, Ron has redeemed himself beautifully.

The treatment of house-elves is a very complex part of the series. On the one hand, many house-elves are clearly treated horribly and it’s outrageous that more people aren’t standing up for them. However, the issue is complicated by the fact that the vast majority of house-elves actually seem to enjoy their work, even if they are being abused. It’s complicated because the slave allegory refers it back to the slave-owner belief that slaves ‘enjoyed’ being enslaved.

Growing up in the wizarding world, Ron has a lot of ingrained prejudices (despite his family being quite possibly the most progressive of the pureblood families).

He does have prejudices towards the giants, although this is further complicated by the fact that even Hagrid (someone who is half-giant) agrees with this perspective (even after meeting giants during his mission for Dumbledore). Ron’s prejudice towards Lupin (due to his werewolf nature) also changes quickly after he discovers Lupin’s backstory.

However, the issue with house-elves is very complicated. Granted, Ron doesn’t really get behind Hermione’s S.P.E.W idea at first, but he correctly points out that Hermione’s attempts to free the house elves (well-intentioned as they may be) don’t take into account the wishes of the house-elves themselves.

Ron treats Dobby and (to a lesser extent) Winky as people, even though they aren’t human. He might not understand the exact socio-political complications around the house-elves situation, but he always shows them respect.

This is just my own opinion of course, but I always saw Ron’s plea to get the house-elves away from danger as an extension of this. Dobby was an innocent creature who just wanted to help his friends, and yet he ended up dying at the hands of a death-eater (the very symbol of the extreme ‘pureblood wizards above all others’ mentality that almost ended up destroying the wizarding world).

I also find it quite interesting that even Hermione forgot about the house-elves during the battle up until this point. I don’t think this was the reason why Hermione kissed Ron (as is often implied). To me, it seems like Hermione kissed him because she couldn’t hold back her feelings for him anymore.

PLEASE SHARE.

Ok, I needed that. My numbers on my art have been pretty pathetic recently, and it was bumming me out. Like, reblogs have been so loooow. Participation has been down. Instagram followers stopped increasing too. Completely stagnant.

I was hoping to do giveaway on my art page when I hit a round number of followers- as it was increasing steadily for a bit- then I have petered out and haven’t consistently gained a follower in 3 months. It’s been stagnant at the same number, no matter how much or little I posted. Gain 5 followers- somehow lose that many in the same amount of time….

I’ve been reluctant to try posting any original stuff, because hey, if my fandom stuff is performing pretty poorly- why the hell would anyone like my own stuff?

Like, posting rough sketches especially- they are barely responding to polished work- and rough sketches get like NO traction.

I need to just make and post and ignore that need for validation- but dangit- it’s hard sometimes.

Will you support me if I’m bisexual? Everybody seems to hate bisexuals…

Oh wow really?? That’s absolutely crazy!!

Of course I support you, no matter what your sexuality is. So what if you are attracted 5o both women and men?? Its your life and you should be able to be who you are and love who you love.

Whowever hates you for being bisexual are complete morons. Ignore the lot of them. They are nothing but toxic people who dont deserve an ounce of your concern.

Do you boo boo!! Keep your head up 🙂

Nonnie – I support you too. You’re more than not-straight enough for the community – and certainly too gay to be straight.

Ditto on what K says – you do you and tell the ones who say you’re full of it for them to shovel it. (One of my mentees is Bisexual and she’s amazing.)

Hello!! It’s me again the same guy who wrote the headcanon of Ron’s voice and insecure life  thank you so much for posting my last one and this next one is something I just thought of. (Romione AU)

  • When King Arthur dies instead of the lady in the lake taking back his sword Merlin convinces her to put the sword back in the stone. The sword sits there waiting for the next king to take it.
  • Merlin’s descendants Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin build Hogwarts around the sword and hide it with the most potent magic.
  • Decades later  when Ron Weasley arrives with his friends he feels as if something is drawing him beneath the castle.
  • In 3rd year he hears of the legend of King Arthur’s sword and seems strangely fascinated by it.
  • He gets taunts from the Slytherins and even some teasing from his classmates when he says he can pull the sword from the stone.
  • Only Hermione doesn’t tease him and truly believes that Ron could lift the sword of the king.
  • The night of the battle of Hogwarts and after they destroy the cup. Ron and Hermione find a hidden chamber with the sword in the stone.
  • Knowing the sword will only reveal itself to the worthy Ron encourage Hermione to lift it. But Hermione says no because she is not the worth one but Ron is.
  • Ron hesitant at first pulls the sword free from the stone and holds it in his hand.
  • The morning of the battle when Voldemort arrives Ron charges at him with sword and he doesn’t stand a chance.
  • The Wizarding world hails the trio and Ron for being the true king. But for Hermione Ron was the king even without the sword

Thank you!!
