Harry’s not shocked or surprised because Hermione didn’t do anything shocking or surprising to him. He knows her temper and how vicious she can be. Sending a flock of birds to attack Ron is something she would do.
Year One: Set Snape of fire.
Year Three: Slapped Malfoy.
Year Four: Trapped Rita Skeeter in a jar.
Year Five: Scarred Marietta Edgecombe’s face.
Let’s break it down a bit:
With a sinking
feeling, he thought he saw a mane of bushy brown hair whipping
out of sight.
He darted forward, sidestepped Romilda Vane again, and
pushed open the portrait of the Fat Lady.
Harry sees Hermione leave and without a single thought or hesitation, he goes after her knowing she’s upset.
The door behind them burst open. To Harry’s horror, Ron came in, laughing, pulling Lavender by the hand.
Harry’s horrified Ron and Hermione are in the same room.
I did always wonder why Harry wasn’t more shocked by Hermione’s bird attack. I mean, people have hypothesised that (since Harry grew up with the Dursleys abusing him) he wasn’t so shocked by physical violence as others might be, but it does seem odd that he wasn’t at least a little shocked when one of his best friends physically assaulted with other.
“You shouldn’t leave Lavender waiting outside,” she said quietly. “She’ll wonder where you’ve gone.” She walked very slowly and erectly toward the door.
Harry glanced at Ron, who was looking relieved that nothing worse had happened.
Here Hermione is leaving again and that instinct to go after her and make sure she’s ok is gone. All he can do is stand there and look at Ron.
To me, that indicates Harry, like Ron, is shocked Hermione didn’t do anything and just walked away.
When she does send the birds, it’s something along the lines of what Harry expected to happen in the first place.
I wish more people got this because some ‘low-empathy’ people are the most compassionate and sympathetic in the universe, and I hate it when that’s taken to mean ‘unfeeling and probably hostile’ when nothing could be further from the truth
Or, as my dad put it,
Sympathy: I know how you feel Empathy: I feel how you feel Compassion: is there anything I can do to help?
Sympathy: that sucks bro empathy: I feel that compassion: want me to send you some puppy and kitten pictures to make you feel better?
What’s your least favourite thing about being a HP fan? I’ll start: having to watch people unnecessarily bolster Hermione’s character resume by making it seem like every single triumph in the series came down to her and her alone because everyone else was Too Stupid™️ to function.
The fact that the books has like 2944383883883 romione and rarry moments that I never got to see on screen is messed up. Where is the scene where Hermione kisses Ron’s cheek? Where is my “Hermione, I love you” scene? Where is that scene where Hermione hugs Ron while He awkwardly pats her on the head? Where is the scene where Hermione kind of asks Ron to the Slughorn party and Harry awkwardly stands there wishing he was anywhere but there. Where is the scene where Ron offers to teach Hermione his whole family tree to protect her? Where is the scene where he offers himself to one of the most dangerous deatheaters just so Hermione survives? Where is the scene where Harry says that he loves Hermione like a sister? Where are the scenes of Ron putting his arm around Hermione to comfort her? Where is the scene where Ron asks Hermione to dance with him because he learned from their fourth year? Where is all the scenes where Ron was the cutest and most supportive friend? Where is the scene where’s Ron Weasley helps Harry to dress? Where is the scene where Ron stands up on his broken leg to protect his best friend? Where’s my Rarry hug after Ron came back? Where are all the scenes where Ron was so freaking charming and so funny that I had to put the book down to take in how much I love this kid? Where is all the scenes where Ron and Harry where being the best friends they’re? Where is the scenes where Ron was the thing that Harry will miss the most? Where is the scenes of Ron being a great emotional support for Harry and knows when to tell Hermione to stop nagging Harry? Where is the scene where Ron notices the “I must not tell lies” scar then telling harry that he needs to report it?
I could go on and on about this f*ckery. Ron, Harry and Hermione deserved better than the movies. JK how could you let Steves and Yates ruin your books??? Can’t believe you even let them ruin your understanding of the characters.
