Important Question!

Does anyone know of any novels that are retellings of Mulan? Or honestly any stories where the female main character disguises herself as a guy, I’m just in the mood to read about a girl who doesn’t have to deal with being a girl. Ya feel?

Thank you everyone who replied! Y’all gave me a nice long list of girl-disguised-as-a-boy books:

  • Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh
  • Leviathan by Scott Westerfield
  • Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
  • Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao (maybe?? Couldn’t find any hint of it in reviews but whatevs I believe you)
  • Eon & sequel Eona by Alison Goodman
  • The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce (Tamora Pierce is the BOMB DOT COM I love her Beka Cooper books)
  • Sovay by Celia Rees
  • Reflection by Elizabeth Lim
  • The Wild Orchid by Cameron Dokey
  • Cymbeline by Shakespeare
  • Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson (ooh that sounds good!)
  • China’s Bravest Girl: The Legend of Hua Mu Lan by Charlie Chin

And bonus: Owner of the Lonely Heart, a T-rated Ron x Hermione fic where Hermione disguises herself as a boy.

I’ve got this idea for a tv show…

It’s a comedy-drama starring Rupert Grint. He’s recently moved to a new city (it can be any city, but you probably have a preferred one in your head), and moves in with some people he’s met online. The show is all about him meeting interesting and slightly quirky people as he gets used to living as a thirty-something who hasn’t quite got his life worked out yet.

What’s your pitch for a Rupert Grint tv show?

Well, for once I’d like to see him play the lead role. Not just some sidekick.

Agreed.

We all know Ron is a talented mimic, but I don’t think we realize how much.

Ron succeded in imitating a person that he had only heard tell three short sentences. The first time and only time before he had had to listen to Pettigrew was in third year, so four years before the Deathly Hallows. And it really doesn’t count. In four years, you have all the time in the world to forget what a person’s voice sounds like.

So when he hears Pettigrew saying shakily “Stand back. Stay away from the door. I am coming in.”, Ron rediscovered what Pettigrew’s voice sounded like. Moreover, he was in a highly distressed state of mind, on the verge of breaking.

Yet he succeded in quickly mimicking this person, and it sounded good enough to fool a Death Eater used to hearing Pettigrew’s voice who practically lived under his roof, and even if he was not just behind Ron he was still in earshot and really attentive.

To understand the extent of Ron’s capacity, you have to know that professional mimics spend days listening and focusing on the person’s voice’s tone and accentuations and particularities to be able to imitate it.

Same thing with the Parseltongue. Ron heard a word said in a language made of whistling sounds, and he heard it twice, and one of those times was five years before the second, – in other words the first time doesn’t count; believe me, if you hear a Chinese word without really knowing his meaning when your sister is in danger of dying you won’t remember it five years latet – and the second one he was once again in a highly distressed state of mind – and yet he succeded in mimicking the sound months after.

He really has impressive observation skills.

Like, this boy is a genius ?

As a feminist, seeing Cate Blanchett in this sort of outfit in her late 40s brings me joy, because most movies would take her age as automatically excluding her from anything even slightly sexy.

As a gay, seeing Cate Blanchett in this outfit renders me incapable of thought and speech.

Hela Gay

@hillnerd just ‘cause I know you have hearteyes for Cate.

And yes, I’m in agreement. A woman in her late 40s getting this kind of outfit – and while pretty objectifying… it’s also hella.

Not my normal post, but please spread this around!! I live fairly close to the fires and I know that is bad and how frightened they are! I lost my house in a fire once and the experience was traumatic. So if you, or someone you know lives in the area of the Paradise, or Malibu fires, please do this or share it if you don’t!

I don’t think Umbridge should have been on Voldemort’s side at all. I think it would have been better to show that she could be a terrible person, but still be on “the good side”

I dont think Umbridge should have existed.

Throughout OOTP Umbridge and Hermione use the same tactics.

Scar students as punishment. (“Sneak” on Marietta, “I will not tell lies” on Harry)

Create an army of students (The DA was her idea, inquisitorial squad)

Use Magical creatures to get rid of their enemy. (Centaurs set on Umbridge, Dementors set on Harry)

They both like rules but have no problem breaking them when they don’t fit their agenda. ( Hermione in like every book,  Umbridge when she sent the dementors)

I’m not saying Hermione is a terrible person, I’m just pointing out that the good side had their own version of Umbridge.

You know what?? Now that you have pointed that ish out…

Character asks for Ron (will add who asked later, as right now I can’t remember)

Ron Weasley

Why I like them: I’ve writen a long essay about this (or five at this point!) but basically- Ron is my very very favorite Harry Potter character. To me he is just so very very wonderful.

Why I don’t: But I do! 😀 It’s hard seeing him struggle with his insecurities. Those parts can be hard to read at times.

Favorite episode (scene if movie/book) I have SO MANY. I mean the classic is the chess game in the first book, but I also love so many of his other moments. He’s such a tender sweetie. The locket scene reveals so much, so as horrible as it is for him, I also kind of love getting such insight into a character.

Favorite book I love him most in book 7.

Favorite line All’s fair in love or war- and this is a bit of both

Favorite outfit I love drawing him in his Auror uniform, hoodies and sweaters

OTP Romione

Brotp Ron and Harry

Head Canon He continued to be an Auror for many years- but was not on active duty much at all after the kids were born- he enjoyed concentrating mainly on WWW and the kids- but would teach, go in when they needed extra help etc.

Unpopular opinion That he’s an amazing character? He seems so hated in fandom- and I just honestly don’t get it.

A wish I wish he had been treated properly in the films, and that JKR hadn’t made him the butt of so many jokes. Or that Hermione or Harry , or anyone, had TOLD HIM how much they valued him.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen Death before he’s ancient. I read a fic where he died at like age 40 on an auror mission, and it made me cry.

5 words to best describe them loving, funny, witty, brave, genuine
