A crack version of HP where Harry and Hermione are actual adoptive-siblings who are extremely creeped out by all the people who keep insisting that they’re dating.
You know I can actually see doing that AU? (Like, I know that this is basically a s***post, but I can see running with this.) Like, the Dursleys, instead of doing what Dumbles asked them to, called the cops and said, “There is a baby on our doorstep we have no idea why please come take it away,” and Harry was adopted by decent human beings? (Taking this opportunity to plug one of my favorite fics, The Dogfather, which has “Harry adopted by decent people” as its premise.) Maybe Hermione’s adopted, too, or maybe Harry’s adopted by Hermione’s bio-parents.
What would Harry be like if he was raised by the Grangers? That’s a really interesting question–how much of Hermione’s personality is nature and how much is nurture? Ron trying to get both of them to loosen up, and Harry takes to it like a fish to water and Hermione takes way longer to come around…
And of course the Wizarding World still insists that Harry Potter and Hermione Granger are 100% the natural Savior of the Wizarding World Power Couple (and ignore Ron because he’s just another Weasley). The wizarding world doesn’t seem to actually have a concept of adoption per se. (Like, they have a concept of guardianship, but not, “I adopted this person and they are now my child and I am their parent” adoption.) So, like, Rita Skeeter would totally not comprehend why Harry was making that face and saying, “Ewww, that’s my SISTER you’re talking about!”
Now that you mention it, I think I did a series of headcanons on this a while back, although I can’t find it in my tags. I seem to recall that I went with the ‘Hermione’s parents adopt Harry as a baby/toddler/small child’ angle, and that it impacted on Harry and Hermione’s personalities a little, since they would bounce off each-other a bit more.
It’s a interesting AU idea, since it makes the sibling relationship between the two more explicit than ‘she’s like a sister to me’ (which is fine too, of course).
Like, you say, the wizarding world doesn’t seem to have any concept of adoptions, since we see no mention of magical beings growing up in magical orphanages. Maybe wizarding society is so small that relatives normally take them in? It does seem odd though.
I can imagine that Harry and Hermione would be utterly grossed out by the media’s perception of them. Obviously, in the main universe, they found it annoying, but in an AU where they actually are siblings, it would be even more uncomfortable for them (not to mention the other students from muggle backgrounds, who are also probably grossed out by all the headlines).
The media’s ignoring of Ron would also play into the classist nature of wizarding society, because Ron’s blood-traitor status (as a Weasley, not to mention being the youngest Weasley boy) is reflected in how little the wider world thinks of him. Which, needless to say, neither Harry and Hermione find especially enjoyable (because they’re pretty much the only people who know how awesome he is, and are infuriated that no-one sees him like they do).
