Ron, Hermione, Krum, and Lavender: an analysis of romance and jealousy

Hello it’s me again!! The same guy who wrote voice of an angel and the insecure life and I’m here with something that’s NOT a headcanon but an analysis of something that has been discussed before but I want to also put my own opinion and take on things. If possible please accept and post thank you so much!!

Now here’s the thing I actually think the Ron and Lavender romance wasn’t bad. I know it’s easy to hate lavender but I have come with an explanation as to why the romance was a good way to mature both Ron and Hermione.  When I first read Goblet of Fire and I arrived at the yule ball scene, my thoughts were “Ron’s being immature and Hermione is allowed to date anyone she wants to” and It was the same thought for Half-Blood prince  just reverses “Hermione’s being immature and Ron can date anyone as well.“  In Half blood Prince Ron is not at fault because he’s dating Lavender because he just wants to be loved (and don’t we all?) at the point in the book where Ginny says that Hermione kissed Krum then Ron decides to give up on pursuing a relationship with Hermione because clearly she doesn’t  like him that way.  Hermione releasing the birds is herself being immature about the whole thing and complaining about not getting what she wanted.  This is an unpopular opinion to most of the HP fandom but really….. Hermione is more immature then Ron.  Ron after the Yule Ball talked to Hermione and resolved the drum incident afterwards and he never really got stared a huge argument after and the whole Krum argument took about 1-2 chapter and a Christmas Eve . In Hermione’s case Ron had to nearly die for Hermione to realise she was being an Idiot.

But this is why I like the Romione relationship and why I think it’s the best romance in all of fiction. The fact is the Ron x Hermione relationship is REAL. There is no love at first sight, vampire hotties, or  kinky sex stuff. The girl and guy are not even in love when they first meet. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger go through life as best friends and only at the end when they have matured do they love each other. Viktor Krum and Lavender Brown were necessary to show that love sometimes is not at first sight. Ron and Hermione had to grow and realise that they were both immature. In deathly hallows they both realise their immaturity and selfishness and decide to put it behind them, that’s what makes the kiss all the more sweeter because they finally grew up. The kiss at the end of Deathly hallows is more than an expression of love but a sign to show that Ron and Hermione are done with immaturity and petty feuds that they love each other and that’s it. This is also why I don’t believe JK Rowling when she says that Ron and Hermione need a counsellor for their marriage because they are already done with the immature part of their like and their love is real even though it took Vicky and Lav-Lav for them to realise that.

Thank you so much, anon! This is some really great analysis.

I very much agree that Ron is more mature than Hermione is; he acts more mature at the age of fourteen (after the Yule Ball) than Hermione does at the age of seventeen (during Ron’s relationship with Lavender). @ronandhappiness and @vivithefolle, this seems up both your streets; thoughts?

Thanks again for the submission, anon!

HERMIONE STOP

Hermione can be a real jerk sometimes. Harry was only trying to help you two reconcile, Hermione, there’s no need to yell at him!

It’s interesting to note, that when Ron was jealous of Krum during the Yule Ball, he directed his anger at Krum (when he was all, “oh, sneaky evil krum must be having ulterior motives!”) He made fun of Krum, and called him, “Vicky.” He never mocked Hermione by calling her, “Hermo-ninny.”

Yet, when Ron and Lavender started dating, Hermione had no problem mocking Ron by calling him, “Won-Won.”

Ron also never stopped beings friends with Hermione even when the Krumione sort of became a thing. Yet, Hermione gave him the silent treatment for months and straight up ignored him when he tried to speak to her. Again, Ron didn’t have to see Krum and Hermione making out as if their lives depended on it…

Can anyone write a fic or a one-shot where Ron has to see Hermione make out with someone else? No, the horcrux doesn’t count. I’m craving a bit of angst right now. I’d like to see how Ron would react.

Ron didn’t have to see Krum and Hermione making out as if their lives depended on it…

True, but thoughts could leave deeper scars than almost anything else. I’m sure whatever Ron thought Hermione and Krum got up to was far worse than what they actually did.

To me, the not knowing is far worse, when you know you can process, deal, and move on. Not knowing is torment, you can wake up one morning thinking the worst and by midday you’ve convinced yourself nothing happened, only to hear that person speak the others name and you’re back to thinking the worst.

Wow…interesting analysis @pynki

Yes, Ron does jump to conclusions (the horcrux hunt; when he automatically assumed that Harry was underestimating Ginny’s punishment.) I like to think that Ron hates not knowing things. He probably felt even more stupid when Ginny acted as if it were common sense that Hermione and Krum made out.

Why would he feel stupid when no one bothered to tell him? Ginny knew, of course. Hermione knew, obviously. Harry knew – maybe Hermione told him?

But Ron was intentionally left out of the information loop.

Then again, Ron was upset in 4th year when Harry was manipulated into the Tri-Wizard Tournament and thought (gives Stinky Eyes to The Author) “I thought we were going into it together?”

The least loved son feels… maybe hurt? … something… when he’s left out of anything.

Could something have happened way back when that he gets barmy when he’s not told something? (I admit it’s a legitimate response to being isolated. Merlin knows I get shirty when people are not telling me things, too.)

Anyone with any idea what could have potentially caused this reaction from him?

I always thought it might have something to do with the way Ron’s personality works. Ron is a very honest person; if he cares about you, he’ll let you know.  The only things he tends to bury are a) his feelings for Hermione and b) his own insecurities and self-doubts.

I think that, to someone who was open about virtually everything to his friends, the idea that they were keeping things from him was a horrifying thing to think about.

Both times he gets angry like this is because he feels he’s been left out of the loop by people that he shared everything with (his home, his support, etc.). It must have been terrifying for him to suspect that his friends weren’t as open to him as he was to them.

Like @diva-gonzo says, Ginny makes it sound obvious that Hermione had snogged Krum, whereas as Ron it was a complete shock. Yes, he’d suspected it, but there had never been any definite proof about it. And all of a sudden, he discovers he was the only one who didn’t know. Even if he didn’t fancy Hermione, he was still her best friend; why hadn’t she told him? Did she really not think it was worth her time telling him?

Now, obviously, Hermione didn’t tell him because she was worried he’d get the wrong idea and assume that she didn’t fancy him and was (instead) dating Krum. Unfortunately, that’s exactly the conclusion Ron comes to.

I personally think that he was saving his first kiss for Hermione. He didn’t care if he had to wait; because he didn’t want anyone else. But then he finds out that Hermione had already kissed someone-else years previously, and apparently, he was the only person who didn’t know. That must have really impacted on him.
