i was thinking about the 6th year at Hogwarts and then i thought about Slughorn as a teacher and i have a lot of strong emotions about him… and those emotions are: i hate him, I Hate Him, I HATE HIM!

I personally don’t outright-hate Slughorn, but I dislike the way he would straight-up ignore people that he didn’t consider ‘noteworthy’ (mainly Ron, but I seem to recall him ignoring Luna during one of his parties as well).

Slughorn was cheerful and jovial, but only to those he considered deserving of it. If they had a famous background or relative (Harry and Neville), were academically gifted (Hermione), or impressed him with nifty spell-work (Ginny, that time she attacked Zacharias Smith on the Hogwarts Express) then he would be interested in showing them attention. I imagine that the vast majority of students didn’t make the cut, and that Slughorn likely strained many a friendship during his time as a professor at Hogwarts.

Thank goodness that Harry didn’t enjoy the attention, and preferred spending time with Ron. If Harry had been more flattered by the attention, Ron truly would have the odd man out AGAIN, since Harry, Hermione and Ginny were all favourites of Slughorn. Being ignored in favour of your friends (including your already-favoured sister) can be rough, but it was even worse for Ron, considering his already minuscule self-confidence. Slughorn’s treatment of him crystallised Ron’s fears of being ‘the spare part’ in the golden trio; the apparently ‘useless’ one overshadowed by the boy who lived and the brightest witch of the age.

Shows you just how wrong Slughorn could be about people, though, considering how much Harry and Hermione depended on Ron (proven throughout the series, but especially so in DH). It’s a sign that everyone has something that makes them special, even if other people don’t see it.

I know that it may sound a bit harsh, and when i first read about him i just found him mildly irritating… but a few years later i EXPERIENCED having a teacher like him. I hated my, what a coincidence, chemistry teacher because she would do the same with the talented and/or rich kids as Slughorn did. I hate him now, because i felt just like Ron for a whole school year. I hate him now because he reminds me so much of my bully. I’ve always felt a bit less-awesome than my peers. AND A TEACHER LIKE HER DIDN’T HELP AT ALL. It mad things so much harder, and unlike Ron, i din’t have all that dangerous shit to go through in the meantime. I did have teen problems and stuff but i didn’t get POISONED and almost die in school… and yet i felt drained every fucking day just by thinking about the subject and how i was too stupid to understand it and how the teacher would never notice and appreciate me… I can’t imagine how HARD it must have been for Ron. BEING BULLIED AND BELITTLED BY EVERYONE FROM EVERY SIDE. It must have been pure torture and i know half of it first hand. This is why i hate Slughorn, because had he not been a selfish prick and actually cared to teach all his students things would have been so much easier for everybody.

There is a disturbingly large part of the Potter fandom that enjoys torture porn, rape fic etc. So I think the Malfoy Manor scene is WHY many ship Bellamione, they think it’s erotic to read about women being tortured, especially by another woman🙄

I find the Bellamione ship highly problematic.

No joke, earlier today, I accidentally got tagged by someone in a Bellamione post which had Harmony, Dramione, Bellamione, Cissmione, and Fluermione shippers with their hands reaching out towards a text box reading ‘Hermione deserved better than Ron’.

I didn’t comment (since it had the right tags on it; ‘sh*t post’, etc.), but it sure did anger me a lot.

I mean, I don’t want to kink-shame anyone, but how can anyone genuinely think that Hermione should have ended up with the person who tortured her (and almost killed her) instead of the person Hermione canonically fell in love with?

It just seems so problematic as a ship, and completely up-ends what the characters were like in-canon.

No offence to those who ship it, but it just isn’t my cup of tea.

Hello, thank you! Sorry about that; it’s nothing against her personally, I just don’t like her acting and celebrity-presence that much. I try and construct my criticism so that it’s more ‘I don’t like her acting much, but I’m sure nice enough as a person’ rather than ‘I can’t stand her and I will bellow abuse at her for no reason’. Being intentionally rude is not my thing at all, and I apologise if it’s coming across like that.

Of course! Whenever I talk about Emma Watson in a less-than-complimentary way, I use the tag ‘#sorry emma’. It also might be of use if you block my ‘#but i personally find your acting iffy at best’ tag as well, since I use that on those posts as well.

Again, I apologise if anyone feels offended or upset about my opinions on Emma Watson. I don’t hate her per-say, it’s just I don’t like her acting or her public-persona. I know most people don’t agree with me on this, and I would never go out of my way to insult people who like her and her work.

As for Hermione, I do still like the character (she is one half of my OTP, after all), but I don’t agree with the fanon perception of her being perfect. She was a flawed character, and I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with that. My personal irritation lays more with the fact that JK Rowling seemed to lose sight of the character once the film series started, and she took on more of Steve Kloves ‘Hermione can do no wrong’ attitude when it came to writing the character.

It’s not that I don’t like her. I don’t think she’s done anything wrong per-say; it’s just that I find her problematic, aside from being (in my opinion) a rather over-rated actor.

Her feminism does seem to be geared towards white, affluent women rather than the wider spectrum of women. That’s just what I’ve gathered from what intersectional feminists have commented on about her. I’m in no position to criticise her for her feminism, what with not identifying as a woman myself. This is just what I’ve gathered from hearing intersectional feminists talking about her.

Emma Watson also has something of a reputation as a diva (and, if not as extreme as that, certainly difficult to work with nonetheless). Changing Hermione’s bushy hair to sleek straight hair because she didn’t like it, for example. Also, the film-makers apparently had to re-organise filming based on what her schedule was, something that (to my knowledge) none of the other actors were privileged with. I’ve heard rumours that she was also very rude to extras, although I’ve never seen conclusive proof of that. Maybe her attitude towards people she works with is in-part due to her apparent-anxiety? Which is fair enough; I used to have social anxiety (still do, a little bit), so I can understand why she might come across as difficult-to-work-with.

Having said that, there’s also the fact that I personally don’t think she’s that good an actor. I find her performances in the HP film series (as well as in other projects) to be dry and quite flat. To me, she seems to have less range as an actor than many of her contemporaries (and I don’t just mean her fellow HP alumni, but other actors the same age as her as well), and I never get the same that she ‘becomes’ the role when she’s acting. She seems to play slightly different versions of herself everytime.

I think you are right about Luna having a crush on Ron. On the train in Ootp when they first meet she says that Padma didn’t like how he didn’t dance with her at the ball, but adds that she herself wouldn’t have minded. There is also the part where she hums the ‘Weasley is Our King’ song. Also in Half-Blood Prince, Ron says Luna has really grown on him. A relationship between them would have been really interesting to read. Just some thoughts ~

Luna probably did have an crush on Ron when she first met him. I think that she realised that he didn’t see her in the same way (since he was in love with Hermione), and was perfectly happy to be his friend.

Ron did come to appreciate Luna quite a lot, and didn’t go out of his way to insult her for her views (something Hermione did constantly in OOTP). The only time Ron did get angry at her was when she said she didn’t think much of Hagrid’s teaching and when they were under considerable stress when searching for a way to get to the ministry of magic.

I think Luna and Ron would have made for a far more interesting relationship than Lavender and Ron. For one thing, it could have been built up slowly during OOTP and HBP, and would have shown Hermione that she had to be more open about her feelings for Ron if she wanted to pursue him romantically. The only problem would be Ron and Luna breaking up in a way that was fair to both characters; since Luna was more appreciative of Ron than Hermione was (at least in OOTP and HBP), it would have been difficult to justify Ron ending up with Hermione (and I’m a Romione shipper saying that).

Honestly, I don’t know if JK Rowling could have done it justice. The only romance’s she was good at writing was Ron x Hermione and Ginny x Harry (and even then, there is still some seriously problematic undertones with both). Lavender Brown worked as a means of getting Ron and Hermione to be more open with their feelings, but was stereotyped as a ‘silly girly-girl’ (problematic writing, to say the least) so that the audience wouldn’t be sorry for her when she and Ron broke up.

Romione is still my OTP, but it would have been nice to see Luna’s crush on Ron developed more in the story.

Thanks to your posts, I’ve been thinking a lot about Luna having a crush on Ron in OoTP and I think it’s a really interesting dynamic? It almost makes me wish JKR had built on that and had Ron and Luna get together for a bit in HBP instead of Lavender. Nothing against Lavender but there wasn’t ANY buildup to her relationship with Ron and the narrative treats their relationship horribly. It would also have been so much better for Hermione’s development as a character in her treatment of Ron.

I know, right! That would have made so much sense, character-wise! I mean, I like Lavender, but JK Rowling framed it as ‘Lavender is the silly girl who steals Ron from Hermione’, which is baffling considering how little more-than-just-platonic appreciation Hermione actually showed Ron up to that point.

If Luna’s crush on Ron had been given more page-time, it would have made far more sense relationship-wise. The Lavender thing just kinda comes out of nowhere in HBP; in the previous books, Lavender paid Ron no real attention, but all of a sudden she’s fancying him and then BOOM they’re snogging after the Quidditch match. It was designed by JK Rowling as a way of making Hermione step up her game, but it feels incredibly forced in it’s execution.

Luna’s crush on Ron, by contrast, could have been built up slowly and steadily over the course of both OOTP and HBP. It would have been far easier to believe, and would have also given their relationship real weight. The Ron x Lavender relationship is more ‘they snog’ rather than ‘they enjoy being around each-other and care about each-other’.

Not only that, but JK Rowling basically had to go out of her way to make Lavender seem irritating. She turned a previously-respected background character into a ‘you shouldn’t be this girl’ metaphor. Which is very messed up, considering that Lavender is one of the few examples we see in the series of teenage girls engaging in hobbies and interests considered traditionally-feminine. Hermione is set parallel to Lavender with her not-considered-traditionally-feminine interests and attributes.

Instead of being a ‘you need to show Ron that you actually like him more often’ lesson for Hermione, the Lavender-debacle is seen as ‘that girly-girl is mean because she stole your crush off you’. Heck, I’d wager that if Lavender hadn’t been obvious to Ron about her affections, Hermione might never have made any kind of move.

Whereas, if JK Rowling had developed Luna and Ron’s relationship steadily over OOTP and HBP, it would have shown Hermione that Ron was insecure about his self-worth and needed some appreciation shown to him before he would ever consider trying for romance with Hermione.

It really could have worked. Luna is Hermione’s polar opposite, and therefore her way of showing her affection for Ron would be the opposite too. Hermione’s method is ‘don’t give any indication that you fancy Ron except in emotional outbursts of jealousy and anger’. Luna’s method, by contrast, is ‘show Ron openly that you appreciate him and enjoy being around him’. And Ron clearly appreciated Luna, even if he wasn’t attracted to her. It would have been good for both characters; Luna would have had someone who appreciated her, and likewise for Ron. Even if Romione is endgame (and my OTP), I think JK Rowling should have given Ron at least one positive romantic experience pre-Hermione (that wasn’t lambasted in the narrative).

I think Hermione took Ron for granted quite a lot. She never really considered that he would try and find romance with someone apart from her. She could ignore him, belittle him, and insult him all she wanted, but the second he looked at another girl for appreciating him, she’d get angry at him.

I think a Luna x Ron relationship would have made Hermione realise that she needed to actively pursue Ron and show that she appreciated him for who he was. It’s a shame it didn’t happen, because I feel it would have genuinely been better for both Ron, Hermione and Luna in terms of character development.

Hmm. That’s a good
question. Well, I think my suspicions when someone pointed it out in a
submission to @harrypotterconfessions last year (which you can find here). Then @weasleyismyking540 went
into more detail about it, and I started to think about Ron and Luna’s
interactions during OOTP (which is where most of the evidence for this theory
comes from). I think it’s a theory that’s starting to gain a lot of support within the Potter fandom (or, at least, on my side of the Tumblr fandom).

Luna’s only known Ron a few minutes at this point, but she appears to find him incredibly fascinating (she later stares at him even when he isn’t speaking). I imagine that she found herself genuinely happy to be around him, even if he wasn’t doing anything. That (to me, at least) sounds like the beginnings of a crush.

It was really sweet of Luna to hold Pig for Ron, despite the fact she’s only known him for a few hours. She also uses the opportunity to talk sweetly about Ron’s pet, which Ron seems a little baffled by (most girls don’t say sweet things to him). Notice that Luna wants to be physically close to Ron as much as possible, which is a tell-tale sign of a crush.

She’s supporting Gryffindor in the match, which is sweet anyway. But she also wishes Ron luck for the match. Also, notice that she refers to him as ‘Ronald’, which is usually just what Hermione calls him when she’s annoyed. But here, from Luna, it sounds like a term of endearment. I think it’s very sweet.

I understand most people don’t really see this, but I can’t help but suspect that when she first met him, Luna was attracted to Ron’s humour, kind-hearted nature, and his caring attitude towards the people he cared about.

Obviously, it didn’t lead anywhere (and my OTP is Romione, after all), but I would have liked it if Luna’s crush on Ron had been developed more in OOTP and HBP. Perhaps it would have given Ron some self-confidence, and maybe helped Hermione realise that she needed to show Ron appreciation a bit more if she wanted to give him hints of her attraction to him.

Sadly, this didn’t happen, and it’s entirely possible that Hermione’s initial dislike of Luna was at least partially based in her realisation that the blonde Ravenclaw was attracted to Ron as well. Luna is Hermione’s polar opposite, and Hermione likely would have felt threatened by Luna’s openness with her affection for Ron compared to Hermione’s avoid-showing-him-your-feelings-at-all-just-in-case-he-doesn’t-feel-the-same-way strategy.

Anyway, that’s why I think Luna had a crush on Ron. Hope you enjoyed my ramblings on the subject, anon. 🙂
