Harry Potter can handle a lot of things:

  • slights against his sanity
  • criticism of his work
  • people not believing all the things that he had to do on his way to saving the wizarding world
  • people still not trusting him thanks to the media

But if you dare disrespect his platonic life partner Ronald Bilius Weasley, then the boy who lived will rain down vengeance upon you.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I think that Ron was very out of character in the beginning of GoF. There are a few instances where Rowling seemed to lose the thread of her own characters. I mean, you cannot tell me that the kid who’d STOOD ON A BROKEN LEG TO TELL WHO HE THOUGHT WAS A CONVICT THAT HE HAD TO KILL HIM BEFORE HE GOT TO HARRY would just not believe his best friend in the whole world- practically his brother- when he said he didn’t wanna be in the tournament, especially as wanting that attention would be very out of character and Ron would know that.

If you look at the build-up to that, it’s more the case that Ron thought Harry had found a way of submitting his name without telling Ron about it.  When they had been discussing entering the tournament earlier in the book, Ron had always made it clear that he wanted to try to get into the tournament with Harry.

Then Harry ends up being made champion. To Ron, the very suggestion that Harry had found a way of entering without telling him would have felt like such a kick in the teeth. To Ron, a character who is loyal to a fault, it must have seemed like a betrayal of their friendship.

Yes, there may have been a certain amount of jealousy involved (as Hermione assumed) but I think the main struggle for Ron was that Harry might have deliberately left Ron out of the loop.

If Rowling did lose the thread of her characters, I would say it was more obviously shown in the way that Harry and Ron (especially Ron) have their intelligence dropped by a considerable amount between POA and GOF.

Personally, I think this was to make Hermione (JK Rowling’s self-insert) seem more intelligent by comparison. Rowling is a good author, but she has a habit of comforting to teenage gender stereotypes in the way she writes many of her characters. Because they are teenage boys, Harry and Ron become ignorant to girls’ feelings, while Hermione now displays amazing relationship advice and interpersonal skills that seem a million miles away from the socially-awkward girl of the first three books. The girl who (in her third year) used the death of a classmates pet to validate her own opinion on a teacher she disliked, is now giving inter-personal relationship advice to Harry. Seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Fangirl challenge → [1/10] friendships: Harry Potter and Ron Weasley (Harry Potter)

“Harry Potter has to go into the lake and find his Wheezy —”
“Find my what?”
“— and take his Wheezy back from the merpeople!”
“What’s a Wheezy?”
“Your Wheezy, sir, your Wheezy — Wheezy who is giving Dobby his sweater!”
“What?” Harry gasped. “They’ve got… they’ve got Ron?”
“The thing Harry Potter will miss most, sir!”

Hypothesis

Harry, Ron and Hermione are at some Ministry party. You know the type; having to mingle with people from other departments, making small talk with middle-managers about filing errors, and being bored out of your mind the entire time.

Anyway, Ron and Hermione are flirting with each-other (nothing new there), and Harry is trying not to yawn at Jim from Magical Maintenance’s story about rain residue. Jim notices a passing colleague, and stops him to introduce Harry.

‘Martin Schulls- meet Harry Potter. No doubt you’ve heard of him.’

‘Oh, yeah,’ says Schulls. ‘Ron Weasley’s best friend, right?’

Harry drops his glass of champagne with a crash, his mouth falling open. Nearby, Ron’s head has swivelled round, his eyes widening with surprise.

‘Harry,’ asks Jim from Magical Maintenance. ‘Are you okay?’

The two ministry colleagues gasp as the boy who lived begins to weep, his mouth stretching into a wide smile. He looks at Ron, tears dripping down the cheeks of the redheaded man, and turns back to his colleagues.

‘You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to be introduced as that.’

1, 7, 32, 45 for the HP asks :)

1. Hogwarts House?  Hufflepuff! Up the badgers! Inter-house unity for the win!

7: Top five ships? Already did this, but…

  1. Romione (my OTP)
  2. Lunarry
  3. Linny
  4. Linuarry (Luna x Harry x Ginny)
  5. Rarry (in an AU setting, and/or having simultaneously with Romione)

32: Favorite friendship? Harry and Ron. My BROTP.

45: Favorite minor character? Hmm. Probably Susan Bones. She was smart, kind and a good example of Hufflepuff house.

Thanks for the asks, @salovie

1,7,13,32 from HP themed asks

1- Patronus? No idea. I’m not on Pottermore. Probably a dog or a hedgehog.

7- Top five ships?

  1. Romione (Ron and Hermione)- my OTP.
  2. Lunarry (Luna and Harry). I like Hinny, but I honestly think this would have made more sense character-wise.
  3. Linny. They’re so sweet, and balance each other out so well.
  4. Linuarry (Poly ship throuple with Harry, Luna and Ginny all dating each other). I honestly feel this is the best outcome, since they all balance each other out brilliantly.
  5. Rarry (as an AU, or happening in the post-war years in a poly ship with Romione, as in Harry and Hermione both being in love with Ron).

13- Character you most identify with? Probably a mixture of Ron (insecurities, self-doubts and loyalty), Hermione (book-worm tendencies) and Neville (used to get bullied and had low self-esteem).

32- Favorite friendship? Probably Harry and Ron. I suppose I could also say the golden trio, but Harry and Hermione just don’t have the same connection that Harry and Ron have. Harry and Ron are platonic (almost romantic) soul-mates in so many ways, and care for each other so much. My BROTP, if you will.
