Thought I’m super frustrated because I’ve read one very long fic that
has Ron searching for Harry, who has amnesia and ran away to America
(and is gay but nobody knew that) and Ron realizes he’s in love with
Harry and the fic has about 30 chapters and it’s on FFN but I can’t find
it!! x_x

Harry has no idea how to tell his best friend he wants more that
friendship. He’s pretty sure this would be hell of a lot easier if he
knew for sure how Ron felt about him. This one is plenty cute. Ron is adorable and Harry… Harry’s trying his best. :’D

to survive. But she had no idea what the effects of a werewolf bite,
when the werewolf was still in human form, could do to their behavior. Okay, who’s up for writing more Creature!Ron fics? Seriously. Someone do some more of those. Here we have Ron as a werewolf, aggressive, feral, self-loathing… doesn’t matter, Harry loves him.
Running with the Wolf, Loving the Man snapshots of Harry Potter’s life with a werewolf boyfriend Follow-up of Our Inner Beasts. Someone heard our prayers and gave us more Werewolf!Ron, and it’s as wonderful as it sounds.
What Happened That’s just the thing, though. He doesn’t know what happened. He
can’t pinpoint a single event where everything suddenly made sense.
There was no epiphany or choir of angels or aligning of stars, or any of
the other rubbish Parvarti goes on about in the Great Hall. There’s no
one moment when he realized, “Oh.” Ron and Harry’s friendship, only it’s not just friendship. The last line will make you want to put on some epic music.

Harry’s subconscious has lots of funny ideas. Ron is ridiculously cute. Might be a bit difficult to read because of FFN’s shitty formating for line breaks.

he’s in love with him. Ron is utterly adorable, do I really have to say it? Why, yes, yes I do.

something. Utterly sappy and fluffy and you know me, I was mostly there for Harry’s description of Ron. It didn’t disappoint.

Very interesting mystery and clever use of a forgotten plot point. The resolution is basically “sex solves everything” but otherwise it’s a great story.
Hug! Hug! Kiss! (second-to-last drabble is NSFW) Ron loses Harry in a foreign land. In other words, Harry accidentally joins a Japanese boy band. This story is ridiculous, confusing, crazy, and absolutely hilarious. No existing celebrities were harmed.
Just Another Teenage Epoch – Ron Weasley, 1999 (NSFW at the end) Ron wants to be an Auror, and he wants to not grow up, and he really wants other people to stop kissing Harry. The classic mistletoe tale! Ron is not amused at all. It’s okay, we’re rooting for him (and Harry is, too).
Trapped in Winter(NSFW at the end) Harry and Ron have an argument. When Ron goes to storm out of the room,
he’s frozen in time, and when Harry touches him to see what’s the
matter, they’re both transported to a snowy winter wonderland. A surprising premise that leads to a confused, hurt Ron and a tight-lipped Harry, and of course, to Harry/Ron. Pretty nice!
That We Might Be Exactly Like We Were (warning: graphic self-harm, realistic depression, themes of suicide) ‘Everything just takes me back, to when you were there…’ This author pretty much nails what depression is like. She also has several other Harry/Ron fanfics that are written just as expertly as this one, but be forewarned, they tend to deal with very upsetting topics as well. Sadly, I could see her version of Ron existing in the canon we know.
Slow Slide (get out) to a Better Place (warning: abuse and r*pe) Harry told himself that everything was fine in his relationship with
Ginny, at least until he couldn’t lie to himself anymore. And by then,
he thought it might be too late. Fortunately, he has two very good
friends who will always be there for him, one of whom might eventually
be something more. Downside: Ginny fans should NOT read this story. Upside: contains Vivi’s most beloved ship, Romione + Ronarry.
Prelude and Fugue (NSFW in the middle) It took over an hour, from the time Harry arrived at work, for him to realise just how different today actually was.
The “Groundhog Day” loop is wonderfully done, you can actually feel the weariness building as Harry wakes up and notices it’s still Monday, bloody Monday.
And Ron is absolutely adorable – yes, I’ll say it every time!
Princes of Maine (NSFW at the end) Harry wakes one morning to find an abandoned baby on his doorstep.
Little does he know that this is only the beginning of his most
challenging adventure yet: parenthood. You want Harry as a single parent and not knowing anything about babies? You have it. You want Ron as a competent Healer who’s sick of Harry’s shit and determined to get answers as to why his best mate is a wreck? You have it. You want Harry/Ron? What are you waiting for, dive in!

Harry’s Pet by earth-dragon-1: Mature! Ron’s as cuddly as a little ol’ kitten. Really. Ooooh how I love this one, it’s so perfectly written and the comparisons are so wonderful. There isn’t true smut, I promise, but I’ll tag it anyway.
Other Waters by Mad Maudlin: Mature! Three years after the way, Harry’s life is no like he expected it to be. Then a face from the past changes everything. A fanfic that deals with trauma and torture and its aftermath. Be forewarned. It’s beautiful still.
What Ron Did by Flaminia Grisandole: Mature! Harry can’t understand why Ron isn’t receiving the credit he deserves. Oh, oh, oh my stars I love this one. I even forgive Harry’s perverse little mind and his smutty slip-up in the middle I love it so much. AU of Deathly Hallows.

I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you, @headcanonsandmore, because even I’m new to this Ron/Harry ship. (And it doesn’t help that I’m very picky about Harry Potter fan fiction and have a complicated relationship with them.) However, you can trust @vivithefolle because she has great taste. I’ve read Or the Look Or the Words, which was really good. It should’ve totally happened in the actual book. Adorable, funny and might make you question if Ron/Hermione deserve to be your OTP (I’m telling you, it was that good.) The writer clearly knows Harry Potter, and characters like Ron, Lavender, and Fleur Delacour are respected (something that’s hard to find in a HP fics these days.)
Unrequited Love is also decent. However, it features a George/Hermione side pairing, which isn’t really my cup of tea. I really can’t see Hermione with anyone but Ron, which is hypocritical and unfair on my part, considering I ship Ron with Harry, Luna, happiness, myself, etc.
So anyway I was up until 3am reading Teapot by IamShadow21 and I highly recommend it. (Mature, kinda angsty, and please read the tags, and also want to throw in a content warning for involuntary outing, but recommended.) Tea and Apples, in the same series, are much fluffier and also shorter, I’d recommend reading them first to get the taste.
i fought the war, but the war won by sable_tyger: it is as exruciatingly angsty as you’d expect from a wwii au, but goddamnit if it isn’t beautifully, beautifully written. i come back to reread this all the time. plus the author’s written a number of other harry/ron stories, so, eat your heart out, anon.

Does anyone know of any novels that are retellings of Mulan? Or honestly any stories where the female main character disguises herself as a guy, I’m just in the mood to read about a girl who doesn’t have to deal with being a girl. Ya feel?

I can’t think of any books, but there is a Ron x Hermione AU fanfic where Hermione disguises herself as a boy. It’s called ‘Owner of the Lonely Heart’. Just a warning; it is rated T. It’s mainly romance, but it does deal with the idea of not having to present as female to the world. Hope you like it. 🙂

I just love how much faith Adrianna had in Ron.
On @pynki‘s recommendation (big thank you, by the way), I decided to check this out. It’s a lot longer than fics I normally read, but I had some free-time to spare (I know, the usually modest H&M reading a mature fic; has the world gone topsy-turvy?).
I love how Ron developed some much self-confidence from people just having faith in him! Heck, just reading about it made me feel like I could be more confident in my everyday life!
I think “Of Hearts and Heroes” gets the Ron-Hermione balance really well. It’s how I would have liked the later end of the series to be; showing that they were both teenagers making mistakes rather than proportioning all the blame onto Ron (also this version of Hermione doesn’t set a flock of birds on Ron).
Such a good story (obviously, being me, I avoided the saucy bits) and I really enjoyed reading it.

There’s some siriusly good fic in the vault for private personal appreciation.
@pynki I only started reading fanfiction in the past year, and most of what I do read tends to be one-shots and drabbles.
I LOVED that bit! It was so wonderful to read; wished he’d gotten that level of appreciation in the books, but I’ll take what I can get. Thank you so much for the recommendation; I really enjoyed it!
You mean the trilogy by Ann Margaret? Yeah, I enjoyed it. But I didn’t like the whole ‘Hermione understands her emotions and is just waiting for Ron to catch up’ thing. I think Emmilyne makes it a lot more balanced; like the fact that both of them are being held back by insecurities (Ron thinks he isn’t worthy of Hermione, and Hermione doesn’t think she’s attractive enough for Ron), instead of just ‘Ron got’s the emotional range of a teaspoon LOL’ like so many fanfics do.
@diva-gonzo I don’t really read mature fics (even with ‘Of hearts and heroes’ I just skipped over the saucy bits), so I don’t know whether I’d be the best person to read them. But I’ll happily check them out if you think I’d enjoy the non-NSFW parts of the fanfics!
@headcanonsandmore That’s how I started reading fics, one-shots and drabbles. I too shyed away from smutty fics, it just felt weird so I would scroll past it.
Not going to lie, I’m curious to see if you’ll end up where I did, preferring novel length multi-chapter fics and yelling “IF IT’S NOT RATED M IT’S NOT FANFICTION!” I wonder if it’s a natural evolution of fic reading or if I’m just a Romione perv. (Probably a Romione Perv.)
Of Hearts and Hero’s is a masterpiece and does Ron great justice. I love that part where their jogging and Adrianna all “go easy on them” and Ron’s all “huh?” and then he realized he could run circles around them if he wanted to… I LOVE that fic. I think I’m gonna start re-read tonight.
It only falls to #2 on my all time fav list after The Hermione Granger trilogy because giving Ron special abilities is extra points in my book and Ann Margaret‘s Drunk!Ron is something to behold.
The Price of love….the whole story kinda hinges on Ron and Hermione doing the do but it is a good read despite that. There’s a bit about a door that cracks me up every time. I’m chuckling just thinking about it. I think there’s a clean version of it in the SPEW library, at least I remember getting a message asking if we had the smut-filled version, could have been for another fic but I’m 75% sure it was for the price of love I’ll double check in case you might want it.

@lillymay77-blog I’m sure there are loads fic rec blogs and tags out there, The ones I know of haven’t posted in ages so I won’t bother giving you those links. There’s no real organization around fic recs and asking about forgotten fics, sorry, it kinda sucks. One of the saddest things about the sites going down is the community that developed within their forums has mostly disappeared.

This post was created out of a moment of nostalgia. Out of the blue, I started thinking about this fic decided to post about, it never crossed my mind that there were people who haven’t read it.
Watching @headcanonsandmore , you and others discovering this fic for the first time is making me so giddy you’d think I wrote it. There are so many amazing fics that have fallen from public consciousness due to age, I have no problem bringing them back from the dead.
I’m sure there are enough of us oldschool fic readers still around to share the ancient text. Right @diva-gonzo?

@pynki Thanks again for suggesting ‘Of Hearts and Heroes’. I’m currently re-reading it for the third time. Not sure if I’ll ever get into reading nothing but mature fics, but I appreciate the recs nonetheless.
I love that bit with the jogging too! Especially when everyone starts fancying Ron and he doesn’t even realise at first. And that bit where he checks to see if someone-else (like Harry) is standing behind him is just…. so Ron. Like, of course he doesn’t immediately realise how attractive he is. And I love it when fics show Ron getting the appreciation he never really got in the books.
@diva-gonzo I’m currently working through a lot of the SPEW-RC vault. Some of it isn’t really my thing, but I’m enjoying some of the less-predominantly-sexual fanfics on there. Especially if they are funny and show Ron getting some respect, and not just falling into the ‘Ron’s an idiot who Hermione likes because he’s cute and adorable when he gets things wrong’ attitude (which I can’t stand).

Remember that part in “Of Hearts and Heros” when Adrianna made Ron Teachers aid because he was the most approachable out of the Trio?
I just love how much faith Adrianna had in Ron.
On @pynki‘s recommendation (big thank you, by the way), I decided to check this out. It’s a lot longer than fics I normally read, but I had some free-time to spare (I know, the usually modest H&M reading a mature fic; has the world gone topsy-turvy?).
I love how Ron developed some much self-confidence from people just having faith in him! Heck, just reading about it made me feel like I could be more confident in my everyday life!
I think “Of Hearts and Heroes” gets the Ron-Hermione balance really well. It’s how I would have liked the later end of the series to be; showing that they were both teenagers making mistakes rather than proportioning all the blame onto Ron (also this version of Hermione doesn’t set a flock of birds on Ron).
Such a good story (obviously, being me, I avoided the saucy bits) and I really enjoyed reading it.

@headcanonsandmore – you should ask @pynki about the SPEW-RC vault. She’s a curator of some of the ancient works that have otherwise gotten lost to the annals of time.
There’s some siriusly good fic in the vault for private personal appreciation.
@pynki I only started reading fanfiction in the past year, and most of what I do read tends to be one-shots and drabbles.
I LOVED that bit! It was so wonderful to read; wished he’d gotten that level of appreciation in the books, but I’ll take what I can get. Thank you so much for the recommendation; I really enjoyed it!
You mean the trilogy by Ann Margaret? Yeah, I enjoyed it. But I didn’t like the whole ‘Hermione understands her emotions and is just waiting for Ron to catch up’ thing. I think Emmilyne makes it a lot more balanced; like the fact that both of them are being held back by insecurities (Ron thinks he isn’t worthy of Hermione, and Hermione doesn’t think she’s attractive enough for Ron), instead of just ‘Ron got’s the emotional range of a teaspoon LOL’ like so many fanfics do.
@diva-gonzo I don’t really read mature fics (even with ‘Of hearts and heroes’ I just skipped over the saucy bits), so I don’t know whether I’d be the best person to read them. But I’ll happily check them out if you think I’d enjoy the non-NSFW parts of the fanfics!
