A concept…

There’s an alternative universe out there where Fleur’s Veela powers effected women rather than men, leading to several very awkward conversations between Hermione and Ron during fourth year.

Okay. Interesting discussion question, actually.

So, veela powers. I generally see it assumed that they function based on who the target is attracted to–so if you’re attracted to women, veelas and veela-descended women affect you, and if you’re attracted to men, veela-descended men affect you.

What if it’s based on who the veela is attracted to, instead?

So the reason Fleur only affects the boys is because Fleur is straight. The reason that only the dudes at the World Cup were affected wasn’t a lack of lesbians in the crowd, it was a lack of lesbians among the mascots?

That would… honestly make a lot more sense from the veela’s point of view. If you’re a magical creature that makes your living magically seducing humans, obviously the humans’ preference in the matter doesn’t matter that much to you.

(It could also create a considerably entertaining flustering for Hermione in the GoF AU under discussion.)

(Also, Fleur/Hermione? Possibly the most plausible woman/Hermione ship I’ve encountered.)

*Piques Interest since I write Ginny/Luna when I have time.*

Not gonna lie, I feel a lot of schadenfreude for the idea that Hermione starts acting like an idiot in front of Fleur, feeling incredibly guilty once Fleur leaves the room, and Ron just shrugging (albeit a little jealously) whilst saying “Fleur makes all girls act like that; it’s not your fault, Hermione”.

Also, Ginny and Luna falling in love after they realise that they both fancy girls (thanks to Fleur’s powers).

weasleyismyking540:

Didnt she try to use her veela charm on him?

Yeah, during the run-up to the Yule Ball. She tried to ask him using her powers, but her aim was a little off and Ron got the full force of it. Which is presumably why Fleur was so shocked about Ron then asking her to the ball.

However, it’s quite common (in my experience, at least) to have a brief crush on someone, and then become closer to them after you get over it. I have seen headcanons about Cedric and Fleur becoming close friend during GOF (many of them taking place in AU’s where Cedric is part Veela as well, and that’s one of things him and Fleur bond over).

But they came around in the end!

talking about all sorts of cultures and the important work she does.

Ginny makes me laugh, and is fun to spend time with shopping. We like to get lunch and discuss something very important.

Angelina is one of my favorites.

We all get along quite well now, and are better for knowing each other.

fleur is such a strong and loyal person and i won’t stand for any of the hp females ganging up on her

#why did hermione ginny and molly hate fleur?

I can only take some guesses.

I love Mrs. Weasley to death, but I have to admit she had a problem with acknowledging her children were growing up/grown. It likely wasn’t a problem with Fleur herself but rather any girl that was taking her baby away. That she was French might have had something to do with it, I cannont speak to Mrs. Weasley’s prejudices. There’s also the fact that Fleur is part Veela and Molly is concerned Bill’s heart wasn’t won in a strictly kosher way.

Ginny, I love her too, but honestly I think she’s just being bratty. This girl is taking her big bro away, plus there’s going to be all this extra work for the wedding, and she’s not happy.

Hermione I’m most sure about. I think she is working off a preconceived notion of hers. That people who are pretty and care a lot about their appearance are petty and shallow. She was probably bullied by such girls in her muggles schooling. She’s certainly made no strides to befriend Lavender and Pavrati, despite being the first witches her age she had regular contact with, likely because they are appearance conscious, so she’s lumped them into that trope.

I always thought Hermione didn’t like Fleur because her Veela powers (unintentionally) had an effect on Ron (just look at the way Hermione gets angry whenever Fleur’s Veela powers made Ron lightheaded in GOF and HBP). Despite the fact that neither Ron nor Fleur wanted that to happen. Heck, Ron probably hated himself for getting caught up by the Veela powers, and Fleur probably knew that Ron and Hermione were nursing mutual crushes on each-other.

I love Fleur and Bill/Fleur but disagree with the prevailing idea among fandom that Ginny, Hermione and Molly Weasley took an intense dislike to her purely out of envy. It’s not that Fleur was attractive: she was very blunt, tactless, overly critical, often dismissive of things that Brits hold dear. I loved her for that and thought it made her a layered and interesting character, but I can also see why some would initially dislike her before seeing what a loyal and good woman she is underneath.

I’m not saying Fleur isn’t flawed but the only thing I remember her doing that was out of order was talking loudly over the top of Mrs Weasley’s favourite singer during Christmas and then making a snarky comment about it afterwards.

When we’re first re-introduced to her in HPB she’s bringing Harry breakfast and then talking about her wedding plans (which, I might add, include Ginny as a bridesmaid, despite Ginny’s behaviour towards her). She’s not rude or overbearing, she’s sweet to Bill (saying how thoughtful he is). Mrs Weasley’s, Ginny’s and Hermione’s reactions to Fleur just seem so over-the-top and the way they talk about her is really nasty and I just don’t really see anything in her behaviour which would warrant such extreme reactions.

The fact that when Harry defends Fleur and points out that she’s actually really smart and brave both Hermione and Ginny instantly snap at him and mock/ridicule him for falling for her looks (when he was defending her mind/personality traits) only convinces me further that jealousy plays into their hatred of her.

I completely agree. Molly, Ginny and Hermione had no valid reason to dislike Fleur. The reason I didn’t find their behaviour surprising is because I’ve seen it in real life. Women hating their sister-in-laws and daughter-in-laws for petty reasons or because they believe that their brothers and sons are God’s gifts on earth and can do “better.”

It’s pathetic and we should strive to be better than that. I just hope Molly, Ginny and Hermione apologized to Fleur for their behaviour.

I think Hermione (and to a lesser extent, Ginny) didn’t like Fleur due to jealousy. Ron (poor bloke) literally couldn’t stop himself from getting all fluffy-headed when around Fleur (because he’s more sensitive to emotional magic than the others).

Even though it’s made very clear that Fleur unintentionally has this affect on virtually every man she meets (excepting Harry most of the time, since he’s the audience POV, and has to keep a clear head), Hermione still judges the cr*p out of Ron for it. Word of advice, Hermione, don’t call the guy you like ‘pathetic’ for something that’s out of his control…

And when Harry (very sensibly) points out that Fleur is more than just attractive (since she was smart enough for the Triwizard Tournament), Ginny and Hermione assume that Harry just fancies her too. Jealousy is definitely one of the main reasons they can’t stand her.

Maybe JK Rowling wrote it that way to show that women can judge other women by patriarchal standards (the assumption that beauty must come at the cost of intelligence) in the same way that men do. Although I personally think Rowling might have partially written it as a way of Hermione getting jealous and insulting Ron AGAIN for something completely outside of his control.

Fleur Delacour though

like omg this girl willingly entered a deadly competition, knowing full well that she could die and she fought so hard and the thing she would miss most was her baby sister like how precious is that

and then she moved to a different country on her own do you even know how hard that is and she basically didnt know anyone besides Bill, who she couldnt really know all that well

she got a job, she worked hard to improve her English, so that she wouldnt be discriminated against, but still was and she had to deal with her fiances misogynistic family, had to deal with Mrs. Weasley, Ginny and Hermione being so incredibly against her and I bet she just really wanted to be friends with them, to earn their respect and not be seen only as a pretty dumb girl because she was so much more than that!!!!!

Fleur Delacour, who spoke her mind even though she knew most of the Weasley family would like her even less because of that, who never backed down, who stood up for herself, who proved to everyone that she wasnt shallow, that she truly loved Bill and wouldnt even let a fucking werewolf attack come between them

Fleur Delacour, who had a wedding in the middle of a war, making at least one day happy in the midst of death and destruction

She took in fugitives, she took care of an ungrateful goblin, when she had absolutely no obligation to, she made her tiny home a safe place for the Trio and Luna and, I mean, they showed up in such a bad condition, Hermiones been tortured, Luna and Griphook have obviously been starved and possibly tortured as well (as far as she knew), Dobby died not far from her home and she asked no questions, she took care of them all

Fucking Fleur Delacour man, shes my hero

and im so angry that I used to dislike her so much, I used to find her annoying and I wished she would just go away and now im like ????????

shes literally amazing why is she portrayed in such a bad light

I always thought she was hated by the fandom because Hermione didn’t like her until DH.

Fleur was always someone who was known for her looks. This fact was kind of ridiculous, really. She was beautiful, of course, but there was so much more to her. Out of all the students from her school to compete in the Triwizard tournament, she was picked. Fleur knew some people probably wouldn’t take her seriously due to her looks, by this point she was kind of used to it. However, entering herself in this wasn’t to prove to anyone else or even to herself. It was something she wanted to do, something she was sure she could do. By Merlin, she did it.

Tonks was also someone who was known for her looks. Admittedly it wasn’t really for the same reason as Fleur but she was used to people looking at her. Her pink hair was obviously not what most considered natural even in the wizarding world. Tonks was beautiful, after all, but not in the way Fleur was and never bothered to maker herself look as such. Although she could change her looks at will she was happier to stay as herself. She always looked cool. However, looks were not the main things to remember about Tonks, she was an extremely talented auror at a young age. She was proud of that. It was something she was able to choose herself unlike her metamorphmagus. Tonks was intelligent despite lacking the ability to behave herself.

Fleur loved her home but there was a lot of pull for her to stay in England after spending a year at school there. She grew to love the place even if to start the cold of the castle had bothered her. In this time it seemed like the perfect opportunity to work and learn English while staying there. She had never had a set goal for herself after school and working at Gringott’s was good for her, although she struggled to get used to working with goblin’s.

Tonks was just a few years out of school when Fleur graduated and chose to stay. Although she had not been alive for the last one, nor had her family split because of it exactly, repercussions of pure blood supremacy ran through her experiences. Maybe that was part of the reason she wanted to be an auror. It was an influence over her choice to join the order. She wanted to go against what things others in her family had done.

They were both young women who were choosing to fight against what was wrong. It was as if their life at school had been leading up to this clash. It was surprising how long it took for them to be able to spend time alone together and actually get to know one another. Order meetings were not exactly a place you could get to know one another beyond plans of resistance.

At some point if finally happened allowing the young women to get to know each other. It was funny no one had even tried to get the only two young ladies to spend time together since in their own ways they were both alone. Not many other members really considered the support women may need to give one another.

They had both spoken badly of one another in the past, if they were honest, but once spending time alone together they clicked. It was pure connection and honesty allowing to talk through their past opinions while developing their new ones.

Fleur was always looking to learn and Tonks loved getting to help her language skills and even some auror tips in case she ever had to fight. Tonks too took to this time to really pay attention to Fleur, she was one of the only people who even attempted to learn French although languages were not her forte. It lead to many laughs between the ladies as they developed their friendship.

Before she knew it Fleur would find herself up at night with worry about Tonk’s safety when she was off on missions. Tonks would find herself writing to Fleur the second she got home.

Neither of them were quite sure when it happened but their friendship was growing.

Shared looks during meetings, but no one else seemed to notice, both women worried the other wasn’t feeling the same.

One night when Fleur was staying at Grimwald place Tonks came back hurt. She had avoided going home since her parents would fuss if they saw their injuries and had not expected to see Fleur. One thing Fleur had always been talented at was healing charms. There was something between this moment that was intimate in a way it wouldn’t have been if it was someone else in either position.

Fleur looked after her. Watching her as she got better. If it had been a male someone probably would have picked up on the way she looked at her but people were kind of oblivious.

Tonks hated being looked after, but she accepted Fleur doing it. She caught herself feeling glad for an excuse to spend time alone together.

Both of them were staying in and out of Grimwald place as the fighting continued. They both liked that they could see each other at any point and made the most of it.

On a rare occasion when they were the only two in the house Tonks decided it was time. She poured her heart out to Fleur who luckily felt the same.

After that night things were never the same between the two.

Proof of concept for Luna!

and Fleur

Thoughts?

Lemme know, kids.

Got a lot of art queueing up that’ll start dropping day by day @hillyminne tomorrow. 🙂

I like what you’ve done with both, but Luna seems a little scary. Maybe tone it down the ‘conspiracy theorist’ aspect a little? But they both seem really good! 🙂

Maybe it’s just me, but, like, Luna is supposed to be disturbing?

Like, Harry and Nev seem disturbed by her when they meet her. She’s described as ‘not blinking as much as normal humans’, has ‘an air of dottiness’, ‘popping eyes’ ‘bulging eyes’.

Luna is my bean, but I dunno man, I thought she was supposed to be disheveled and sort of creepy in a lovable way. Guess I missed out on the lovable 😛

Man, two for two losses. 😦

Hmm. I see what you mean. I suppose my crush on Evanna Lynch has lessened the impact of Luna’s apparent dottiness- maybe the films effected my perception of the character in that regard?

I never saw Luna as creepy, but more misunderstood. I’m mildly autistic, and I’ve been told that my eyes bulge more than most people, but it being more ethereal than creepy (I get called ‘tall, dark and mysterious’ quite a lot as well). Maybe I just assumed Luna would have the same thing going on (I headcanon that Luna is autistic).

Oh no, don’t feel bad! These are still really good! You do a brilliant job with both of these characters- I’m just nitpicking!
