I love Halloween because it’s the one day of the year that I get to pretend to be someone else. I get to put on a literal costume and be a really great actor for the entire evening. I have an excuse to be immersed in fairytales, to believe in Magic, and ignore the real world that waits for me outside. I have one night to myself to be a kid again and no one shames me for wanting to wear my costume all day.
I love Halloween because it gives me an excuse to completely be myself. The self I feel inside of me all the time, the parts of me that have been beaten down for years by people who just don’t understand why I am so in love with fictional stories.
Halloween is my one day that someone calling me “obsessed” means I did a great job with my costume, and all my decorations. It’s the one day of the year that word doesn’t come out of people’s mouths with derision. Today is my happy day and I cherish every moment I get to feel free to be my whole self.
harry never realised that he didn’t know when his parents had died
thinking back, he could remember asking aunt petunia once when he had become an orphan
he had earned extra chores and a trip to the cupboard for that
he was all smiles that first halloween at hogwarts, eager to see what a magical halloween was like
he didn’t understand the side glances he got as he walked into the great hall
ron smiled uneasily at him as he sat, a stark difference from his overwhelming exuberance and enthusiasm just an hour ago
“listen, mate. i’m sorry about earlier… i forgot. you don’t have to go exploring the castle with me if you’d rather.” he mumbles, avoiding harry’s gaze
a flicker of fear stirs in harry’s heart. is this the day that ron decides that harry’s too much of a freak to want to remain his friend? (maybe uncle vernon was right after all, maybe he didn’t deserve to have friends)
harry struggles to keep his voice even “if you have other people you want to be with, you don’t have to spend your time with me. i completely understand.”
ron blinks in confusion, “no i meant today probably isn’t a good day… i mean, it’s halloween surely you…”
“yes i know today’s halloween. what’s special about that?” harry asks, bemused
ron’s eyes widen as he realises something. “don’t you know that your parents died today?” he asks suspciously
and harry just stares blankly at him for a good five seconds before slowly shaking his head. “no… the dursleys never told me… i can’t believe i never knew…”
maybe this explained the funny feeling he got at this time of the year
I left tumblr for 12 hours and when I get back everything is hitting me with jily death in my dashboard
Can we remember halloween also brought the friendship of harry, ron and Hermione forever
Also that scene is what brought me to Harry Potter!!
Halloween is the beginning of the
Día de los Muertos
– a few days of both death and life- where we celebrate the lives of those who have left us, reconnect with them, and celebrate with our living friends and family.
Harry was able to connect with a new family of friends that day- and it’s beautiful. I headcanon that Halloween becomes a bit of a celebration like that for the Potters and Weasleys (of course, I’m very much just being influenced by my own experience with the holiday…. and then I have my Audrey headcanon- but yeah…)

Harry and Ginny carve pumpkins (using both magic and non-magic methods) with their kids. Harry enjoys taking his mind off the anniversary of his parents deaths, as the pumpkins remind him of the halloween feast at Hogwarts, and of the night when he, Ron and Hermione became firm friends.
Ron and Hermione often go trick-or-treating (Rose and Hugo insist, despite Hermione’s worries about their dental health). Last year, Ron went as Ed Sheeran, and no-one realised except Hermione (who decided to sing ‘Perfect’ to him when they were…er, alone). Often, they’ll pop over to Harry and Ginny’s to help with the pumpkins (which Harry loves).
Neville often helps makes massive pumpkins for Hagrid
Luna makes decorations for her friends to use, as well as helping Neville and Hannah with the plants as Hogwarts
After the kids have gone to bed, Ginny stays up to cuddle with Harry, and whisper sweet nothings into his ear.
Over at the Weasley-Grangers’, Ron has finished baking Hermione’s favourite pumpkin pie. On repeated occasions, Hermione will stop eating to press a kiss to Ron’s cheek (he blushes everytime).
Harry and Ginny fall asleep in each-others arms, safe and content.
