I love how Harry just genuinely likes Luna. Not in a romantic way, but in a “I don’t know how or why but I get you and you get me and I’d be honored to call you a friend and if anyone messes with you I’ll wallop them” kind of a way. I think he just marvels at her level of don’t give a fuck and her absolute sense of self. And then he and Ginny partially name their daughter after her (Lily Luna) and that to me is just fucking precious.

You have to at least ship their friendship.

It’s because Luna leaves him alone. Harry feels upset? Luna talks about her newest theory on whatever magical creature she believes exists. He feels down and depressed? Luna distracts him by talking about Amazon river spirits. Luna gives Harry what he needs, in that she reminds him he is not the center of the universe. That’s what he wants. Harry never wanted to be the savior of the Wizarding World. He never wanted any of it, and he hates that his parents died for a prophecy about him, and he hates thinking about his miserable childhood.

Everyone else keeps accidentally reminding Harry of who he has to be.

Luna is so absorbed in knowing she never once cares about his name as a legend. He’s Harry, her nice friend who holds her shoes for her when she wants to walk barefoot in the woods so she doesn’t startle the moss-people.And he never complains about her oddities, like so many people, and she appreciates that.  And for him, she’s Luna, the friend who just needs him to hold her shoes for her. Luna never wants anything from him but for Harry to hold her things and listen to her talk and give his own input to her theories, mad as they might be at times. When Harry is with Luna, it’s always these quiet, content moments. She’s a bit mad, yeah, but she gets him. And he gets her.

Harry will fight anyone who calls her “Loony Lovegood”. Even though she doesn’t care, he does.

Their friendship is so pure. So is her and Ginny’s. And her and Rons.

Hermione, you utter fool. WHY U NO BE NICE TO LUNA!?

Augh. I am a huge Romione shipper, but Hermione is such a jerk sometimes

I never understood Hermione’s dislike of Luna. I mean; yes, Luna’s beliefs are a little unusual, but you all go to a school of magic. Is it really that difficult for Hermione to just go ‘okay, whatever’ like Harry, Ginny and Ron did?

I’m a Lunarry shipper, so obviously I love Harry and Luna’s relationship. But I also love Luna’s friendships with Ginny and Ron (not to mention Luna’s adorable crush on Ron in OOTP). They just all really liked her and appreciated her, even if they thought her beliefs were unusual.

I wish I could say that Hermione was the same towards Luna. She really could be a judgemental little jerk at times. I don’t care if she was ‘the brightest witch of the age’, she could be so mean to people just because their views were different to hers.

Yo, @headcanonsandmore could you remind me of what moments were shared by Ron and Luna? I am completely blanking out. And when did she have a crush on our lad!? With love, Me.

@iforawesome You’ll find all the receipts for Ron and Luna moments here. A lot of their shared moments in OOTP could be read with the subtext that Luna had a crush on Ron. I personally think it should have had more of a focus in that book, and maybe it could have encouraged Hermione to be a bit more open with her feelings towards Ron. If you check my tags for this post (especially the ‘did luna have a crush on ron’ hashtags), you’ll find a whole bunch of different things I’ve reblogged and written about the subject. Enjoy!

I would really like hinny if they were well-developed. She’s fun and not dramatic, a contrast to Harry’s dangerous and sad life, I understand why he would fall for her. But it wasn’t well executed. Harry didn’t give a shit for her until the sixth book, where he suddenly starts to feel jealous and to think about her, while Ginny seemed to have outgrown her childish crush for him. And they spend so little time together, that the scene where they broke up didn’t mean anything to me.

I mean……

Harry and Luna anyone?

I’ll take that!!

YES TO THE LUNA X HARRY! Hinny is cute too, but I’ll always have a soft spot for some Lunarry/Huna (or even Harry x Ginny x Luna in a poly relationship).

Luna and Ron headcanons

headcanonsandmore:

Remember I posted a while back about Luna’s crush on Ron during OOTP, and how it would have been nice to see that get more attention? Well, that was on my mind for a while, so here’s some headcanons about how I think it could have gone.

(Don’t worry, fellow Romione shippers, Ron and Hermione still fancy the arses off each-other, and Luna x Harry shippers might find something to enjoy as well…

Enjoy!

  • From the moment she saw
him, Luna knew there was something wonderful about Ron Weasley.
  • Maybe it was the way
his shockingly red hair seemed to reflect the sunlight of that September day,
as the Hogwarts Express carried them to school. Almost like a beacon, shining
light around it, and drawing people in.
  • Or maybe it was the way
his smile was lopsided, so that it looked like his whole face was changing as
he laughed. Ron had a kind face, the sort of face that you could imagine smiling
all the time in earnest support of loved ones.
  • Whatever it was, Luna
    liked it.
  • Ron and Hermione had
just finished their prefect duties, and Ron had sunk into a seat opposite Luna,
eyes closed as he savoured the chocolate frog in his mouth. His chin had a few
coppery hairs clinging to it, as if he had missed a few whilst shaving. But
maybe Ron didn’t shave, or maybe he chose not to. Luna liked those hairs
    regardless; they had character.
  • Ron seemed rather
perturbed when she remembered that he’d gone to the Yule Ball with Padma Patil.
Why she felt the need to point out that she wouldn’t have minded going with
him, she didn’t know. But it felt necessary to make it clear. Why was her head
feeling all woolly as she said it? Probably
    a wrackspurt…
  • He also seemed confused
when she burst out laughing at his “baboon’s backside” joke about Gregory
Goyle. But it had been hilarious; Luna couldn’t remember the last time she had
laughed so much. Ron was a very funny person, and she quite liked that.
  • She also quite liked
his little owl, Pigwidgeon. Ginny happened to have mentioned that Ron had let
her name the bird, which Ginny thought was a very sweet thing to do. By the
sounds of it, Ron had never really anything brand-new, and yet he had still let
his little sister name the pet. Luna knew that Ron must be a very kind person.
  • ‘He’s a sweet little
owl, isn’t he’ she had said to Ron as she handed the bird and its cage over to
the gangly redhead. Ron seemed a little baffled by her choice of phrase.
  • As he took the cage out
of her arms, Ron’s hands happened to brush against Luna’s. His skin felt warm
and smooth against her fingers, and Luna felt a shiver go up her spine. A Nargle, perhaps? But they didn’t collect
in outdoor areas; what was going on?
  • In the weeks that followed,
Luna often bumped into Harry, Ron and Hermione in-between lessons. On one
occasion, she made sure that Harry knew she believed his story about seeing
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named return. Out of the corner of her eye, she couldn’t
help noticing the way Ron had loosened his collar, so that several beads of
sweat were noticeable on his exposed neck. Luna thought that he looked very
    nice.
  • Another time, she saw
Ron chatting to Hermione Granger in the Charms corridor, and decided to say
hello. He greeted her with a cheery wave, and a brief smile. However, Hermione
Granger did not react so enthusiastically; her brow furrowed into a frown, and
her eyes darted suspiciously between Ron and Luna as she walked past them. Interesting, Luna thought; I wonder why…
  • A few weeks later, Luna
accidentally ran into Ron when he was running late for a Prefect meeting. There
was a tremendous crash, and Luna opened her eyes to find Ron’s shocked face
barely a few inches from her own.
  • ‘I-I’m so sorry, Luna,’
Ron spluttered, helping her to her feet. ‘This bl**dy shoes are too tight, and
I keep tripping over my own feet. Are you okay?’
  • ‘That’s no problem,
Ronald.’ Luna smiled, feeling a curious giddy sensation pulsing through her
    stomach. ‘No harm done.’
  • ‘What about that?’ Ron
said, pointing to her ear. One of her dirigible plum earrings had cracked. ‘Did
I-? Bl**dy h*ll, I’m so sorry; it must have broken in the crash!’
  • ‘No matter,’ Luna said,
casting Reparo on the earring, which
    fused back together.
  • ‘Well, I’m late for a
Prefect meeting, but let me make it up to you,’ Ron continued, bending down to
pick up Luna’s bad, which had fallen off her shoulder in the collision. ‘What
    can I do?’
  • ‘How about a drink in
Hogsmeade on the next visit?’ Luna said at once.
  • Ron’s eyes widened in
    confusion.
  • ‘Why would you want
    that?’
  • ‘It’ll be fun; I don’t
usually get to talk with people on Hogsmeade trips.’
  • ‘Really?’ Ron asked,
his voice now filled with concern. ‘Well, of course I’ll come along. Three Broomsticks at eleven, okay?’
  • ‘I’ll be there.’ Luna
smiled, as Ron began to hurry along the corridor again. ‘Bye!’
  • The redhead waved,
    flashing his usual lop-sided grin.
  • Luna felt positively
giddy with excitement. She was going for a drink with a friend in The Three Broomsticks; she couldn’t
wait. Although she wasn’t sure why she was so happy, after-all, Ginny was her
friend, and she didn’t feel so excited about hanging around with her. Oh, well…
  • Over the next few days,
Luna saw Ron a few more times in the corridors, often accompanied by Harry and
Hermione. Whenever she waved, Ron replied in kind, and so did Harry (although
he often seemed exhausted). But Hermione seemed to look angrier with each
occurrence. Her eyes would narrow, and her lips would purse as if worried. Luna
wondered whether she had done something to offend the bushy-haired Gryffindor.
  • Before Luna knew it, it
was the morning of the Hogsmeade visit. Ron had previously mentioned that he’d
meet her in the pub, rather than at school, since he’d have to get some prefect
duties sorted first that morning before he left.
  • Luna was sat patiently
at a small booth by the window of the pub. She drummed her fingers nervously on
the table, which was unusual for her. She felt very nervous, but that was
probably because she hadn’t ever hung around Ron for a long period of time
before. She took a small sip of butterbeer from her glass; it was very
    delicious.
  • The door of the pub
opened, and Luna caught a glimpse of red hair. She looked up, but it was Ginny.
  • ‘Hi Luna!’ the
redheaded girl grinned, walking over. ‘Are you waiting for someone?’
  • ‘Hello, Ginny,’ Luna
smiled. ‘Yes, I’m meeting Ron in a minute.’
  • ‘Really?’ Ginny
frowned, confused, before a thought seemed to occur to her. Her mouth stretched
into a wide smile. ‘Oh, I get it. Hope you have a great time. My brother can be
a bit of an idiot at times, but he’s a good person. Have fun!’
  • And, with that, Ginny
made her way over to Michael Corner, who was stood nearby the bar, ordering a
    Butterbeer.
  • Luna wondered what
Ginny had meant. What was the big deal
about her meeting up with Ron? Wasn’t that what friends did?
  • ‘Luna! Sorry to keep
    you waiting!’
  • Ron had walked through
the door, followed by Harry and Hermione.
  • ‘Hello, Ron,’ Luna
smiled up at the redhead, feeling her stomach squirm again. ‘And Harry-
Hermione- it’s nice to see you!’
  • ‘Thanks!’ grinned
    Harry, shaking Luna’s hand.
  • ‘Hello, Luna,’ said
Hermione, giving a half-hearted smile that did not reach her eyes. She seemed
    somewhat apprehensive.
  • ‘Let’s get some
drinks,’ Harry said, dumping his coat in the seat next to Luna. ‘Butterbeers
    okay? Back in a sec.’
  • Ron sat down in the seat opposite Luna, and
Hermione followed into the seat next to him; her eyes flicking again between
    Ron and Luna.
  • ‘So, how have things
been, Luna?’ Ron asked, running his hands absentmindedly through his hair,
making his long ginger locks stick up in odd directions. ‘You enjoying fourth
    year?’
  • ‘Oh, yes; very much so!’ Luna grinned, her
vision lingering on the cowlick currently hanging over Ron’s left ear. It
looked very interesting. ‘And are you enjoying fifth year, Ron? I’ve seen you
    doing prefect duties.’
  • ‘Er, that’s more
Hermione’s thing.’ Ron said; nodding towards the bushy-haired witch sat beside
him. ‘I’m just the tag-along, really-’
  • ‘No, you’re not!’
snapped Hermione, her eyes flashing. ‘You’re a brilliant prefect!’
  • ‘You didn’t seem very convinced
when I got my badge,’ Ron muttered, rubbing the said-badge with the sleeve of
    his robe.
  • ‘That’s-that’s entirely
different, Ron!’ Hermione exclaimed, her face turning red. ‘I never doubted
your abilities- I was just a little shocked-’
  • ‘These two arguing
again?’ Harry asked, putting three Butterbeers down on the table, and sitting
down next to Luna. Ron and Hermione seemed oblivious as they continued to bicker
with each-other. ‘Sorry about that, Luna; they’ve always been like this.’
  • ‘It’s no problem,
Harry.’-Luna smiled at him, and noticed a small blush appear on the
raven-haired boys’ cheeks-‘I know they don’t mean to.’
  • ‘G-good.’ Harry
stammered, taking a big gulp from his glass. Luna wondered whether she had
un-nerved him somewhat; she often had that effect on people. Although, judging
from Harry’s reaction, he looked more nervous than uncomfortable. Luna supposed
it was because they hadn’t known each-other that long. Which gave Luna a sudden
    thought.
  • ‘So, you three have
been friends a long time, then?’ she asked, making Ron and Hermione stop
arguing and turn to look at her.
  • ‘Since first year,’
    Hermione said, earnestly.
  • ‘Yeah, we got attacked
by a mountain troll,’ Ron said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. ‘That was an
    interesting Halloween-’
  • ‘You mean I got attacked by a mountain troll-’
  • ‘In the girls’ toilets,
    wasn’t it?’
  • ‘I was crying because you were so rude to me-’
  • ‘I said I was sorry! How
many times do you want me to apologise for that?’
  • Harry rolled his eyes
at his two friends, and turned to face Luna.
  • ‘Sometimes, you just
have to let them bicker. They’ll tire themselves out.’
  • However, another
    thought occurred to Luna.
  • ‘Ronald, your freckles
    are very interesting.’
  • Hermione and Ron
stopped bickering, and both turned their heads to face Luna, Ron looking
    baffled and Hermione irritated.
  • ‘Er, thanks,’ said the
    redhead, looking a bit confused.
  • ‘They remind me of the
    sky at night.’
  • ‘Is that… good?’
  • Luna chuckled, dimples
    appearing in her cheeks.
  • ‘Yes,’ she continued,
smiling at the look of apparent bafflement on Ron’s face. ‘Your eyes are very
nice too; like a sunny day in July.’
  • Ookay,’ Ron said, rubbing his neck awkwardly. ‘Er, your eyes are
    really nice too, Luna.’
  • ‘Thank you!’
  • Hermione clenched her
fists, making her nails scratch the table surface. Her brow was furrowed, and
    her teeth were gritted.
  • Harry’s eyes flipped
nervously between the confusion on Ron’s face and the visible anger on Hermione’s.
  • ‘Er, how about we all
head over to Zonko’s?’ The spectacled boy asked, downing the rest of his drink.
‘Let me and Luna go pay for our drinks and then we can pop over.’
  • Harry climbed out of
his seat, and Luna followed him over to the bar. While Madam Rosmerta rung up
their bill, Harry leaned in close to talk to Luna.
  • ‘Sorry that Hermione’s
    being so rude.’
  • ‘Oh, that’s fine. I
understand that she doesn’t like me that much.’
  • ‘I don’t think she
hates you or anything.’ Harry said, casting a glance back over at his
bushy-haired friend, who was bickering with Ron again. ‘I just think she gets a
    little….er….’
  • ‘Possessive?’
  • ‘Over Ron, you mean?
    Yeah. Especially since last year.’
  • ‘Was it during the Yule
    Ball when this started?’
  • ‘Funnily enough, it was.’ Harry said, giving a small
chuckle. ‘Those two never seem to be aware of how much the other likes them.
Ron’s been in love with Hermione for years, and vice versa.’
  • Luna pondered this for
a moment, her heart giving a sad little twinge.
  • ‘I can understand why
Hermione would fall in love with Ron. He’s a very nice person.’
  • ‘Sorry you had to find
out this way.’ Harry said, giving Luna an apologetic look. ‘I know what it
feels like to realise your crush fancies someone-else.’
  • Luna felt like the
breath had been knocked out of her.
  • ‘Is that what this is?
    A crush?’
  • ‘Yeah,’ Harry said,
patting Luna on the arm. ‘I mean, Ron’s a great bloke, so I don’t blame you.
But Hermione really is his one-and-only. At least you found out now before you
    got your hopes up.’
  • ‘That’s okay,’ Luna
said, sincerely. ‘I like being Ron’s friend, so I wasn’t hoping for anything
    else.’
  • Harry smiled at her.
  • ‘You’re a lovely girl,
Luna.’ He said, his cheeks dimpling. ‘I’m sure you’ll make someone very happy
    someday.’
  • It was at that moment,
with Harry grinning warmly at her, that Luna felt her heart beat a little
    quicker.
  • ‘T-thank you,’ Luna
stammered, feeling light-headed. ‘You’re a lovely person too, Harry.’
  • Harry grinned again,
    his cheeks turning slightly pink.
  • ‘Do… do crushes happen
a lot?’ Luna asked, tripping over her tongue. She felt a great desire to find
    out.
  • Harry smiled at her,
his eyes glinting so much that Luna could see herself reflected in his bright
    green eyes.
  • Let’s find out, shall we…

Hope you enjoyed these, everybody!

Thanks @justsaya! And @godjihyologist, I did tag this under ‘Romione’, ‘Lunarry’, ‘Huna’, and ‘did luna have a crush on ron’, so this is under the correct tags. Sometimes Tumblr will malfunction and put it under other tags (I once had a Romione post end up in the Harmione tag for some reason).

into a wide smile. ‘Oh, I get it. Hope you have a great time. My brother can be
a bit of an idiot at times, but he’s a good person. Have fun!’
  • And, with that, Ginny
made her way over to Michael Corner, who was stood nearby the bar, ordering a
    Butterbeer.
  • Luna wondered what
Ginny had meant. What was the big deal
about her meeting up with Ron? Wasn’t that what friends did?
  • ‘Luna! Sorry to keep
    you waiting!’
  • Ron had walked through
the door, followed by Harry and Hermione.
  • ‘Hello, Ron,’ Luna
smiled up at the redhead, feeling her stomach squirm again. ‘And Harry-
Hermione- it’s nice to see you!’
  • ‘Thanks!’ grinned
    Harry, shaking Luna’s hand.
  • ‘Hello, Luna,’ said
Hermione, giving a half-hearted smile that did not reach her eyes. She seemed
    somewhat apprehensive.
  • ‘Let’s get some
drinks,’ Harry said, dumping his coat in the seat next to Luna. ‘Butterbeers
    okay? Back in a sec.’
  • Ron sat down in the seat opposite Luna, and
Hermione followed into the seat next to him; her eyes flicking again between
    Ron and Luna.
  • ‘So, how have things
been, Luna?’ Ron asked, running his hands absentmindedly through his hair,
making his long ginger locks stick up in odd directions. ‘You enjoying fourth
    year?’
  • ‘Oh, yes; very much so!’ Luna grinned, her
vision lingering on the cowlick currently hanging over Ron’s left ear. It
looked very interesting. ‘And are you enjoying fifth year, Ron? I’ve seen you
    doing prefect duties.’
  • ‘Er, that’s more
Hermione’s thing.’ Ron said; nodding towards the bushy-haired witch sat beside
him. ‘I’m just the tag-along, really-’
  • ‘No, you’re not!’
snapped Hermione, her eyes flashing. ‘You’re a brilliant prefect!’
  • ‘You didn’t seem very convinced
when I got my badge,’ Ron muttered, rubbing the said-badge with the sleeve of
    his robe.
  • ‘That’s-that’s entirely
different, Ron!’ Hermione exclaimed, her face turning red. ‘I never doubted
your abilities- I was just a little shocked-’
  • ‘These two arguing
again?’ Harry asked, putting three Butterbeers down on the table, and sitting
down next to Luna. Ron and Hermione seemed oblivious as they continued to bicker
with each-other. ‘Sorry about that, Luna; they’ve always been like this.’
  • ‘It’s no problem,
Harry.’-Luna smiled at him, and noticed a small blush appear on the
raven-haired boys’ cheeks-‘I know they don’t mean to.’
  • ‘G-good.’ Harry
stammered, taking a big gulp from his glass. Luna wondered whether she had
un-nerved him somewhat; she often had that effect on people. Although, judging
from Harry’s reaction, he looked more nervous than uncomfortable. Luna supposed
it was because they hadn’t known each-other that long. Which gave Luna a sudden
    thought.
  • ‘So, you three have
been friends a long time, then?’ she asked, making Ron and Hermione stop
arguing and turn to look at her.
  • ‘Since first year,’
    Hermione said, earnestly.
  • ‘Yeah, we got attacked
by a mountain troll,’ Ron said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. ‘That was an
    interesting Halloween-’
  • ‘You mean I got attacked by a mountain troll-’
  • ‘In the girls’ toilets,
    wasn’t it?’
  • ‘I was crying because you were so rude to me-’
  • ‘I said I was sorry! How
many times do you want me to apologise for that?’
  • Harry rolled his eyes
at his two friends, and turned to face Luna.
  • ‘Sometimes, you just
have to let them bicker. They’ll tire themselves out.’
  • However, another
    thought occurred to Luna.
  • ‘Ronald, your freckles
    are very interesting.’
  • Hermione and Ron
stopped bickering, and both turned their heads to face Luna, Ron looking
    baffled and Hermione irritated.
  • ‘Er, thanks,’ said the
    redhead, looking a bit confused.
  • ‘They remind me of the
    sky at night.’
  • ‘Is that… good?’
  • Luna chuckled, dimples
    appearing in her cheeks.
  • ‘Yes,’ she continued,
smiling at the look of apparent bafflement on Ron’s face. ‘Your eyes are very
nice too; like a sunny day in July.’
  • Ookay,’ Ron said, rubbing his neck awkwardly. ‘Er, your eyes are
    really nice too, Luna.’
  • ‘Thank you!’
  • Hermione clenched her
fists, making her nails scratch the table surface. Her brow was furrowed, and
    her teeth were gritted.
  • Harry’s eyes flipped
nervously between the confusion on Ron’s face and the visible anger on Hermione’s.
  • ‘Er, how about we all
head over to Zonko’s?’ The spectacled boy asked, downing the rest of his drink.
‘Let me and Luna go pay for our drinks and then we can pop over.’
  • Harry climbed out of
his seat, and Luna followed him over to the bar. While Madam Rosmerta rung up
their bill, Harry leaned in close to talk to Luna.
  • ‘Sorry that Hermione’s
    being so rude.’
  • ‘Oh, that’s fine. I
understand that she doesn’t like me that much.’
  • ‘I don’t think she
hates you or anything.’ Harry said, casting a glance back over at his
bushy-haired friend, who was bickering with Ron again. ‘I just think she gets a
    little….er….’
  • ‘Possessive?’
  • ‘Over Ron, you mean?
    Yeah. Especially since last year.’
  • ‘Was it during the Yule
    Ball when this started?’
  • ‘Funnily enough, it was.’ Harry said, giving a small
chuckle. ‘Those two never seem to be aware of how much the other likes them.
Ron’s been in love with Hermione for years, and vice versa.’
  • Luna pondered this for
a moment, her heart giving a sad little twinge.
  • ‘I can understand why
Hermione would fall in love with Ron. He’s a very nice person.’
  • ‘Sorry you had to find
out this way.’ Harry said, giving Luna an apologetic look. ‘I know what it
feels like to realise your crush fancies someone-else.’
  • Luna felt like the
breath had been knocked out of her.
  • ‘Is that what this is?
    A crush?’
  • ‘Yeah,’ Harry said,
patting Luna on the arm. ‘I mean, Ron’s a great bloke, so I don’t blame you.
But Hermione really is his one-and-only. At least you found out now before you
    got your hopes up.’
  • ‘That’s okay,’ Luna
said, sincerely. ‘I like being Ron’s friend, so I wasn’t hoping for anything
    else.’
  • Harry smiled at her.
  • ‘You’re a lovely girl,
Luna.’ He said, his cheeks dimpling. ‘I’m sure you’ll make someone very happy
    someday.’
  • It was at that moment,
with Harry grinning warmly at her, that Luna felt her heart beat a little
    quicker.
  • ‘T-thank you,’ Luna
stammered, feeling light-headed. ‘You’re a lovely person too, Harry.’
  • Harry grinned again,
    his cheeks turning slightly pink.
  • ‘Do… do crushes happen
a lot?’ Luna asked, tripping over her tongue. She felt a great desire to find
    out.
  • Harry smiled at her,
his eyes glinting so much that Luna could see herself reflected in his bright
    green eyes.
  • Let’s find out, shall we…

Hope you enjoyed these, everybody!

What do you see as Harry and Luna’s main similarities and differences? How do you think they’d bring out the best and happiest sides of each other?

lavellenchanted:

In terms of similarities, most obviously they both know what’s like to be an outcast. Harry is immediately set apart because of his fame, and during his time at Hogwarts he swings back and forth between being idealised as a hero and turned into a social pariah, both of which leave him on the outside and treat him more as a label than a person. Luna’s ostracised for the majority of her time at Hogwarts because of the things she believes and slightly odd demeanour.

As a result of that, they’re also both very loyal people who form a kind of family out of their close circle of friends. And they’re both empathetic and kind because of the unkindness that’s been shown to them, although to slightly varying degrees (which I’ll touch on in a minute).

I also think they’re both very open and honest people. Luna obviously doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what she is, even when other people would like to shame her for it, she’s very open about the things she believes in and she has a knack for “blunt honesty”. Harry isn’t great at verbalising his feelings, but he’s hardly a stoic character that other people find hard to read – everyone knows when he’s angry or frustrated, and he’s pretty damn upfront about everything even when it might be more prudent not to be.

Their lives have also been touched by death in a very significant way which has shaped the way they see the world around them. Harry and Luna are the only ones of the circle of characters we see who can see the thestrals, and hear the voices beyond the veil. It’s not necessarily something that would make or break a relationship, but it is a significant parallel between their characters and I think having someone who understands the impact of death as a formative influence (everyone experiences loss, but not everyone experiences it at such an early stage in life or in such a violent way) would create a unique kind of bond.

As far as differences go, most immediately Harry has a much more fiery personality than Luna, who is a quieter, more moderate character. Pretty much everything about Harry’s life is extreme, and that includes his emotions. Harry’s fairly impulsive and he reacts strongly to things; Luna takes things much more in stride and is hard to unbalance. She lets things wash over her more, I think, where Harry’s instinct is to jump in and try and change them.

Harry’s also more grounded than Luna – although I hesitate to use that term because I don’t think Luna’s completely off in airy-fairy land with no conception of reality the way she’s sometimes made out to be. Harry, as is really only to be expected given the life he’s led, is hyper aware of reality and what’s going on around him. Luna tends to live more in her own thoughts, and while she’s not unaware of the world around her she manages to keep it more at a distance.

Harry cares far more about what other people think of him than Luna does, which is a good part of why their ways of being open differ. Harry is sensitive to other people’s censure or ridicule (probably in good part stemming from the abuse he’s suffered) and even though he’s mostly able to shrug it off and just carry on with things, it does affect him. Luna genuinely doesn’t give a damn; she is who she is, and people will either like her or they won’t. She appreciates people caring for her and liking her, but she’s not going to be bothered if they don’t.

Now, as I mentioned, I think they are both empathetic and kind people. But Luna is more empathetic than Harry. Harry has a tendency to be rather self-absorbed – for completely understandable reasons, but it can lead to him being brusque or seeming unsympathetic when he’s not. Luna, I think, tends to look outside herself more. To put it another way, when Harry notices what’s going on with other people he’s very compassionate, but he doesn’t always notice (e.g. he handles finding out about Neville’s parents sensitively and has a lot of sympathy for Neville, but never thinks to ask where Neville’s parents were in the first place). Luna does notice.

As for how they bring out the best each other, I think the differences I’ve mentioned are very complementary rather than the type of difference that just leads to clashing – I think they would help nurture each other’s best qualities while growing past some of their flaws.

I think the series shows just how much Luna brings out the best in Harry. She’s the one that manages to reach him at his darkest points – she helps bring him out of the deepest moment of grief over losing Sirius, and to find enough happiness and hope to conjure a patronus when he’s almost overwhelmed by the Dementors.

I’ve seen a lot of people use the scene at the end of Order of the Phoenix as a reason they couldn’t work as a couple, because Harry feels sorry for her and you can’t build a relationship on pity. I completely disagree for two main reasons: first, Harry doesn’t find Luna pitiable as a person. He never things she is just someone in general that he pities in a pathetic way. He feels pity about a specific situation, i.e. her being bullied, which is not an unreasonable reaction. Second, that scene is the only moment in Order of the Phoenix when Harry actually thinks about someone else’s pain. Now, I’m the first in the line to defend Harry’s anger and self-absorption – he’s an abuse victim suffering from PTSD, whose safe space has been compromised and is being re-traumatised all over again – but I think it says a lot that talking to Luna he actually takes the time to consider and empathise with what she’s going through, and to talk to her honestly about losing a parental figure. Luna brings out his natural empathy and kindness, that is no bad thing.

Harry is accepting of Luna’s eccentricities, even when he doesn’t personally understand them, and comes to truly appreciate them, and he treats her with a care and consideration we don’t really see from anyone else. He values her as a friend and equal.

And I think the fact that he’s “grounded” while Luna’s “up in the air” would work really well in their favour. To use another trope, he’s the “realist” to her “dreamer”. Harry would help ground Luna more in reality, without losing the essence of beliefs (it’s her ability to believe in more that helps gives him hope), and she, I think, would help him keep some things at more of a distance and find quiet moments where he can be just Harry and not anything else, just like she does at the end of Deathly Hallows.

AU ‘If Harry met Luna before his fifth year’ headcanons

shesells136seashells:

headcanonsandmore:

Harry meeting Luna in his
third year, after Ginny introduces her to them all. They get along surprisingly
well. Luna talks about the Grim that Harry has been seeing for most of the
year, and helps him calm down about it all.

After Cho turns Harry
down when he asks her to the ball, Harry bumps into Luna in a corridor. In the spur of the moment, Harry asks her to the Yule Ball ‘as friends’. Luna happily accepts.

They have a
surprisingly good time (Ron, on a tip from Luna, asks Hermione to the ball
earlier on, but, since Krum had already asked her, Hermione has to decline. Her
and Ron have less of a falling out than they do in the main universe, although
Ron still gets a bit jealous).

Harry and Luna don’t
dance much, but they have a fun time chatting about all the magical creatures
that Luna’s interested in at the minute, which helps Harry take his mind off
Cho. Harry walks her back to Ravenclaw Tower after  the ball finishes, and Luna tells him ‘I
had a really nice time, Harry- thanks for inviting me
’ whilst giving him a big
hug. Harry walks back to Gryffindor Tower in a good mood, albeit with a slight
blush on his cheeks.

Luna comforts Harry
after Cedric dies, and Harry grows closer to her as a result. They send letters
to each-other over the summer, which they both enjoy doing.

Harry starts to fall
for Luna in his fifth year when they are both in the DA, and being around
each-other a lot more. He begins to notice how awesome she is (he did before,
but not in this kind of way), how
beautiful she is as a person, and how much he enjoys being around her.

Luna starting to
develop feelings for Harry around the same time (she had a slight crush on him
before, but it really starts to develop into proper feelings when they start hanging
out again when Harry’s fifth year starts). Luna being slightly worried, but
still wanting to be around Harry because he’s her friend, and she likes being
around him.

Harry and Luna chatting
after the last DA session before Christmas, and Harry accidentally letting slip
that he loves her. Harry being petrified, going red and stammering his
apologies.

Luna smiling, leading
him by the hand under a nearby borough of mistletoe, and giving him a tender
kiss on the cheek. Both of them giggling dorkishly with their foreheads resting
together.

I love this!!

Thank you; glad you enjoyed it!
