I always get upset at how biased Hermione and Harry were when Ron tried out for keeper. I don’t think he was a good keeper, Hermione basically cheated for him, and it irks me that they would do this when it’s more than “Harry’s team” because those matches go towards house points. The other guy, whom we did not get to know at all other than he was interested in knowing Hermione, was obviously more fit for keeper.
Except we do know more about that “other guy.” He’s a jackass who tried to take over the quidditch team the one time he was on it. While Mclaggen is technically a better keeper, he was a pain in the butt to work with. When he heard that Ron got poisoned, he cared nothing for his safety or Harry’s feelings and basically announced that he was on the team. He was constantly trying to take over their practices, coaching the other members of the team when he had no right to. And, let us not forget that time he wapped Harry upside the head with a beater’s club during a match because A. He took the club from one of the team member’s whose job it was to use them (during a match, lest we forget) and B. He was so busy showing off his superior technique that he didn’t notice his captain flying toward him. I have worked with people like this, the kind of people who think they’re God’s gift to the world due to this talent that they have. And if I had to choose between that person and someone who’s maybe not as good, but at least takes direction well, I’ll take the not as good person, because then at least I can work with them.
Cormac McLaggen was of roughly the same skill level as Ron (Ron saved five goals in the try-outs, and McLaggen would have done the same if Hermione hadn’t confunded him). The main difference between the two was that (aside from occasional moodiness and insecurities) Ron got along with the rest of the team far better than McLaggen did. Also, Ron’s lack of an ego meant that he could always improve as a keeper; McLaggen thought he was perfect already and therefore would have never tried to get better.
Ron won the Quidditch cup for Gryffindor when no-one thought he was any good. McLaggen lost Gryffindor a match and put Harry in the hospital wing because of his own ego.
Skill isn’t the only thing necessary for sport; being a team player and constantly trying to improve your performance is incredibly important too.
Percy: Yes, six. Two older brothers and three younger brothers and a younger sister. You?
Oliver: Wait, you’ve got six siblings? So your parents have seven children? Awesome! One full Quidditch team. You must be playing all the time. What’s your position? I’m a keeper.
Percy: I don’t play Quidditch.
Oliver: You’re kidding, of course you play Quidditch, you’re exactly seven players with all your siblings.
Percy: No, I don’t play Quidditch. My brothers do, but I don’t.
Oliver: But you’re exactly seven players, why else would your parents want to have seven children?
netflix series following the storied career of the gryffindor quidditch team please
like, the in-canon team, featuring Voldemort Shit happening on the sidelines but never being emphasised or addressed because it’s all about the quidditch
I’m so happy, for Oliver Wood’s sake, that he graduated at the end of Harry’s third year. imagine if his last year had been during the triwizard tournament, and he rolls up to school just to hear Dumbledore casually announce, “btw, no Quidditch this year.” there would have been bloodshed.
imagine oliver wood when he’s an old man talking to his grandchildren and they’re like, “grandpa, you must’ve known harry potter, right!” and he’s like “oh yes, he was on my quidditch team, he was a great seeker even just as a first year-” “yeah but what was he like? was he a total hero?! did you think he could destroy voldemort back when he was eleven!?” “i remember his very first game-” “no no no, tell us how he found the philosopher’s stone!” “HE CAUGHT THE SNITCH IN HIS MOUTH” “grandpa no-” “WE ARE TALKING ABOUT QUIDDITCH”
Then his husband Percy Weasley walks in and is like ‘he could have done better on his OWLs’ and the children just,,, cry
