It is our duty as feminists to protect and respect women in Hijabs
Now. More. Than. Ever.
Question: if I see someone pull off a Hijab, what should I do? I know there are reasons they are worn so I want to if i should stand in between them and who did this, should i protect them from view somehow, or something else? This has been happening a lot so I feel it’s something everyone needs to know.
Good question! I cannot correctly and effectively answer, as I am a white, non-Muslim person; however, I will reblog in case any of my followers can answer.
I asked my Hijabi friend, so here’s one Hijabi’s answer:
“my opinion is, definitely try cover them or give them something to cover themselves with. And perhaps shoo off the person, without putting oneself in danger! God forbid, if that happened to me, I would like someone to come and comfort me and give me something to cover my hair with and then help me report it to the cops
“
(Followers, if any of you are hijabi and would like to expand on this answer or offer alternatives, please do.)
If u see it happen to 1 of us, pls cover our head + hair with a coat or shawl or any piece of cloth, while hugging us in comfort. Please don’t get hurt by lashing out @ the perpetrators in any way, coz if they dare to do that, they’re probably too far gone in their own hatred to listen to any reason. Much love + Thank You to anyone who supports us.
yes !! everything said here is important af. if you see someone pull off a girl’s hijab immediately cover her hair and provide comfort. don’t talk to the perpetrator but try to get the woman out of there if you can. maybe if you have a scarf on you at the time give it to her so she can wear it until she’s alone and can replace her hijab. please please protect muslim girls because we already had it hard before donald trump became president and now its gonna be worse with people going around thinking their violence and cruelty is justified
for my other white ppl who might have a hard time, it’s my understanding that a hijab is like a major item of clothing, not an accessory like a hat or a scarf.
so think abt it more like if someone just ripped someone’s shirt or skirt off. u don’t want to be left there exposed or have to walk home without it.everyone, even outside America needs to protect our Muslim sisters in these times.
as a man, what would be the best thing to do? should i turn my head and avoid looking at their hair? can i still offer a jacket or something similar?
^I’m hoping someone has an answer islamaphpbia is on the rise in my town and I want to be a good male non Muslim ally
For men, yes please, we would prefer it if you avoided looking at our hair, and if we don’t have something to substitute as a hijab at that moment, anything you could lend us, a jacket, etc, would be very appreciated.
Also, since most girls avoid physical contact with men they’re not related to, please do not hug them, but rather shoo the offender away if you can, or at least escort the girl to a safe place. You can still offer words of encouragement and support. Furthermore, understand that the victim may not be very welcoming towards you because she’ll obviously be shaken, and won’t know where you are coming from. If that’s the case, please still give her something to cover herself (hijab is very important, think of it as someone ripping your shirt off) and stand some distance away until you are sure she’s in safe hands.
Thank you so much for your support, we really appreciate it, god bless all of you.
In the horrible climate we’re currently in, please take note of this.
Reblogging this again for the guy-instructions
Same
Yeah, thanks for that :’) I appreciate your asks a lot.
I love Percy Jackson & the Olympians but I’m not so keen on all of the spin-offs. Kane Chronicles was decent (egyptian mythology has always fascinated me) and Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods and Heroes was just…perfect. I mean, the same Percy Jackson who happens to be the Sassmaster and Lord of Wit, teaches us about Greek Mythology? Sign me up! I’d highly recommend those two books.
However, I didn’t think Heroes of Olympus was as good as PJO and BoO was a major disappointment. I still love the characters, and Leo is my favourite from the gang, but the finale put a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve read the first book in the Apollo series as well, out of sheer curiosity, but I only loved Meg and I was angry that we didn’t get any build-up to Will/Nico. I might read the next books for my Nico, Leo and Meg, but overall, something felt off. And I have no interest in reading the Magnus Chase books.
IMO, now it’s time to stop. It feels like these mythology books have been going on forever. Rick needs to say these goodbye to these characters and start writing new books with fresh ideas. I have no interest in reading another series that revolves around Percy Jackson’s long lost cousin called Isabelle Jackson, whose parents belong to Indian Mythology. Cassandra Clare is pulling the same shit with her Mortal Instruments series. It’s the same old recycled crap, but people still buy her books. J.K Rowling tried separating herself from Harry Potter but it didn’t work. Her new books were crappy, so she went back to HP. Therefore, I can understand why authors keep on expanding their existing fictional worlds, but that doesn’t mean I’m happy with it.
May I know why you hate Riordan? Is it because of the poor representation of Muslim women? That upset me greatly and I hope he apologises and strives to do better in the future. (I also hate him, but mainly because he makes Leo Valdez and Nico Di Angelo suffer.) Not saying that you can’t hate him, but I’d like to know if there’s anything that I haven’t heard of. After reading BoO, I was angry with him, unfollowed him everywhere, and removed myself from all PJ fan groups.
As for my favourite books, my main genres are sci-fi and historical fiction, and least favourite is romance. I haven’t read TATBILB because I’m very picky when it comes to romance. Apart from HP, and PJO, here are some of my favourite books in no particular order:
- The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. (tw rape in one of the later books. dw, it’s not a spoiler.)
- A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni (tw: war, child and forced marriage, rape, abuse, paedophilia, murder)
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. (tw: war, violence, deaths.)
- Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (tw gun violence)
- My Lady Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. (If you need a laugh at the UK’s expense, you’ll like this. The main couple also remind me of Ron and Hermione.)
- The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis (tw rape, attempted rape, and graphic violence)
- Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed (tw marital rape, child and forced marriage, drugging, abuse)
- The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.
- Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis.
- Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick. (tw suicide, rape, depression, self-harm and sexual abuse)
- Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes.
Thanks for the ask 🙂
Last year, someone asked him when Reyna was gonna get a gf on Twitter and he went on a rant about how she couldn’t be a lesbian and how horrible it would be be if she WERE a lesbian, even though the person din’t specify her sexuality and even though many lesbian Pjo fans see her as one and connect to her.
He blocked people who tried to call him out on his lesbophobia and in the second Toa book, theres a lesbian couple who got kicked out of the Hunters because their love by Artemis-even though the pledge was that they couldn’t have romance with men,not that they couldn’t have romance period-and that they were lucky she din’t kill them. This is pretty messed seeing as the purpose of the Hunters is to give women protection from men and wlw of all people need that.
A lot of his writing also has racist undertones(Piper wears feathers in her hair,Hazel’s skin being described as ‘brown as a roasted coffee bean’,etc)and Clarisse and Silena’s relationship feels like both que*baiting and bury your gays.I’d recommend going to reynaisalesbian, pipersgay or jercys blogs since they have a lot of good critique and analysis.
Sorry,this is kinda long🙏
Are you serious?
That is so rude of him. What the fuck? I’ll do my own research (not saying that you’re lying but I’d like to see for myself) but if all of that is true, then Riordan is cancelled. The worst part is that he claims to be all for diversity, but I had no idea he was problematic too.
Speaking of Artemis, fuck her. I don’t know if it’s exactly Riordan’s fault because Artemis (the character) is very fucked up. In Greek Mythology, when the girls agree to give up on men and dedicate a life to joining the Hunt; apart from immortality, they also get Artemis’s protection from filthy peasants who can’t keep their genitals to themselves. Yet Artemis let one of her huntresses get r*ped by Zeus (fuck him honestly) Don’t get me wrong, Zeus is the monster over here but Artemis abandoned her huntress and turned her into an animal when she found out she was pregnant. In conclusion, Artemis is horrible (although, most of them are terrible, apart from Hestia.) I can see why people got upset though. That’s the J.K Rowling way of representation (write queer characters but make them look like villains for falling in love.)
Now, it’s been a while since I’ve read the books, but I feel ashamed for not recognizing those racist elements of his books. Maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy HoO that much? Thanks for suggesting those blogs! I’ll see if they have any sources too. I’ll be sure to read their essays as well, and thank you so much for letting me know. I really appreciate it.
Also – never apologise for typing long responses ❤
@headcanonsandmore I know you’ve read PJO and HoO as well, so uh…thoughts?
@ronandhappiness I’ve read both PJO and HoO, as well as the Kane Chronicles, but I’m not really in the fandom, and I’m not really caught up on discourse surrounding these issues. I’m shocked that Rick Riordan would say these things, as well as the problematic ways that he has written characters in the past. Like you, looking back on it, a lot of it (to me) seems very problematic.
I’m a bit of a Mythology nerd, so I understand that the Greek Gods are profoundly messed-up people. With the exception of Hestia, who is basically the gods’ version of Luna Lovegood. Let’s just say that no-one has anything especially bad to say about Hestia.
Yeah, Rick Riordan is incredibly problematic as a writer. I’m glad I didn’t read further than ‘HoO’, judging from what people have said.
okay, i really need to get this off my chest.
first things first, i love samirah with my whole entire heart. she was the very first muslim character that i saw in media that wasn’t the terrorist bad guy and she meant so much to me, especially when i found out about her as a 13 years old, during a time where i was resigned to the fact i’d probably never get a cool hero like me. i cried for ten minutes when i found out we would be getting a hijabi in one of my fav book universes, and i cried again when she mentioned in that one (1) line about the islamophobia she faced. even 3 years later, she still is very dear to me and means so much to me.
but.
can we stop acting like rick created good muslim rep w/ samirah lmao. as much as i adore samirah, it’s incredibly frustrating as a brown muslim girl to see her religious background treated so insultingly in the series and have it be praised by fans. it’s very clear one you start reading mcga that rick barely did any research about muslims, and it shows. like, rick literally wrote in the fucking child marriage stereotype even though if he had actually done some research he would have known that arranged marriages aren’t a thing in islam but rather result from culture. he has characters like magnus say he got uneasy at first when he heard samirah say ‘allahu akbar’ and have alex sprout some stupid shit about how she thought samirah’s fasting for ramadan was soooo weird every couple of chapters. lmao like kids are reading this stuff and internalizing it and their view of muslims is going to be impacted by how muslim characters are treated and written in this series, i genuinely do not understand how some of you think this is making a great leap in representation or wtever when samirah’s writing is like that
like, this guy literally wrote in a child engagement and you guys praised this shit even though it’s a fucking stereotype about muslims that’s either 1) used to promote further disgust and hatred towards muslims and brown people (aka it fuels islamaphobia and racism) or 2) used to defend pedophilia. so not only did rick incorporate a harmful stereotype into his children’s series, he made it seem like a ‘but NOT ALL ___’ kind of thing when he had samirah say ‘maybe i wanted it’ when asked about her engagement.
like, holy shit. i don’t care if samirah has been in love with this dude since she was 12 or wtvr, this line was deeply uncomfortable considering that child marriages are such an extremely sensitive topic within real life brown communities. young girls around the world are suffering and forced into marriages in real life, this is stuff that so many girls live in fear of their whole lives and many MANY brown & muslim communities n cultures are coming together to actively fight this shit and. rick writing that line? doesn’t help or even respect that issue at all.
tldr; don’t praise a dude for barely meeting the bare minimum and increase your standards, samirah is not the muslim representation we deserved and rick needs to do better. samirah deserves better, muslims deserve better.
Holy crap. I’m so glad I decided not to read Magnus Chase.
Glad I never read past Heroes Of Olympus. Yikes!
@ jk why speak out about labours Antisemitism but no conservatives Islamophobia??????? good for you for speaking out about the first but is it different to call people parasites if your a conservative?????? It’s okay, you may as well admit you voted conservatives now, we all know you did.
