Thanks to Elenaina969 for submitting that list Emma’s stans have
created. It has encouraged me to write this 1400+ words rant just to
antagonise them. I know it’s long, but please, try to have a wee looksee
at it. 🙂
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Emma Watson is more than what she appears to be…
1. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. Let’s be honest, the only
reason why she’s even snagging roles from the likes of Aronofsky and
Amenebar is because of her marketability as a result of the Potter
franchise. She ain’t Brie Larson nor Mia Wasikowska. Just look at the
Potter films; look at those eyebrows doing a Mexican wave whenever it’s
given the opportunity to do so (which is almost always, really). Also
note the number of times how favourate darling visually conveyed
agitation and exasperation. It’s almost always the same:
heavy-breathing, panting, sometimes an unconvincing set jaw. If you’re
still convinced she’s a good actress, then kindly watch BBC’s adaptation
of Ballet Shoes. She stood out, but not for the right reason.
Her younger co-stars put on a more convincing performance; Emma didn’t.
And if you’re still not convinced, then you ought to scrutinise her
performance in Perks, Bling Ring, and the latest craptacular, Regression.
Does that sound like a very convincing American accent to you? Hmmm?
How about the wooden line delivery? Let’s be honest, whenever she’s
putting on a ‘performance’, she sounds like she’s reading her lines from
her kindle.
2. She has a penchant for slut-shaming. Okay, remember the time Emma dissed
Queen Bey for being too sultry (and immediately began to back-track
when Tavi Gevinson suavely shot her down for it)? I’m afraid that wasn’t
the only time Emma slut-shamed women. She has said things that are
legit problematic, and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. For example, in an
interview for the Telegraph, Emma has said she finds women showing their
cleavage to be vulgar. She also seems to be under the impression that
women solely show their cleavages for sexual favours. I think our angel
forgot to realise there are women out there who can’t help having big
breasts. In making such statements, she has essentially body-shamed
women who have bigger breasts. Additionally, she has shamed women who
wear certain types of clothing, and she has shamed women who are
confident about their sexuality. Now, I hear some of you may be arguing
that she said these things from a feminist’s stance, or she was young
when she made these obviously stupid comments. However, Emma has
recycled this shit over and over again, and on a more serious note,
slut-shaming does not equal feminism. Generally,
feminism is about achieving parity between the sexes in social,
economic, and political arenas (the movement becomes more precise with
different types of feminism). It is also about accepting sexuality
between the sexes. Slut-shaming is essentially grounded on patriarchal
ideals about how women ought to behave or dress up. Slut-shaming
discourages and damages; it doesn’t empower.
3. Point Two leads me to the other problematic attribute Emma possesses:
her hypocrisy. Now, I understand we all can be a bit hypocritical from
time to time. Unfortunately for Emma, she epitomises hypocrisy. Emma
Watson is the most hypocritical thing to walk on this earth. So
apparently, according to Emma, it’s not okay for other women to be
dressed in a particular way, but it’s perfectly alright for Emma to show
her cleavage at Harry Potter premieres and elsewhere. It also saddens
her to see women pile on make-up and dress up in a generic way. Isn’t
this befitting for someone who was the [dumped] ambassadress for
Lancôme? I wonder if it saddens her when she puts on that obnoxious
amount of makeup on her face too? Let’s be honest, we’ve seen her
scantily dressed, and we’ve seen her face caked with makeup. Surely she
should practice what she preaches, right? The whole ‘less is more =
sexy’ formula? To me, it just seems like she’s trying to be like all of
the starlets and celebs she’s dissed in the past. I really don’t have a
problem with Emma wearing short skirts or putting on a lot of cosmetics
on, but I have a major problem with her hypocrisy pertaining to these
subjects.
4. Emma’s hypocrisy leads me to her other problematic area of interest: her
commitment to fair-trade fashion. Sure she collaborated with People
Tree to create the overpriced garments, but has she actually been seen
wearing the clothes? I mean apart from the fancy photoshoot, did anyone see her
wearing these clothes in her downtime? All I remember seeing was her
wearing Burberry, and last time I checked, that label ain’t entirely
fair-trade. Fast forward to recent years, I’ve yet to see her wear
fair-trade clothes. She could also try a fair-trade stint with Topshop,
right? I mean, nothing’s really stopping her from trying, right? I’m
also get the sense she doesn’t want to wear fair-trade clothes, right?
Just look at her casual clothes. As mediocre and plain as they are, they
don’t look like they’ve been ethically made. I mean some of the brands
don’t look like they’re brands concerned with fair-trade. And she has
name-dropped a few of these brands too – not fair-trade at all.
5. One of the other undeniable facts about Emma is her inherent snobbery. I
suppose when you have parents who have worked in top law firms, and can
afford to give you a lavish upbringing, you’re bound to be a spoiled
little shit. Pretty sure that’s what happened to Emma when she was
growing up. Unfortunately, her involvement in Potter magnified her
rotten attitude. She was rumoured to be a diva, a loner, and a sufferer
of the special snowflake syndrome. She certainly has a holier-than-thou
aura surrounding her, and it’s unfortunately lived on into her
adulthood. She boasts about how grounded she is, about the grounded
upbringing she had as a child, about her education at a low-tier Ivy
League university. More recently, she boasted about how she was trying
to figure out Hermione, when her contemporaries were colouring their
hair (it’s not like she coloured her hair during the filming of Harry
Potter, right? Her hair totally wasn’t blonde, right?). She
also likes to set her standards high, as if she’s an academy award
winner worthy of such merit. She only accepts quality scripts that are
worthy enough for an English major like her (interestingly, she had just
started her degree programme. So you can sense the freshman
pretentiousness just from that comment), she likes to work with
directors who tell good stories (I don’t think Bling Ring and Regression told
a story at all, to be frank), and she thinks she is worthy enough to
work with high-profile directors. In fact, most of the directors she has
worked with have received prestigious awards for their projects. She
really likes to set the bar high for herself. There’s nothing wrong with
aiming high, but there’s a process one has to follow to reach it. Now
this process is called humility. Emma lacks humility, unlike her other
co-stars. She isn’t passionate about acting: she’s only interested in
fame and superiority.
6. Now the final truth about Emma Watson is ironically
the antithesis of the concept of truth: Emma’s constant lies. Let’s be
honest, we all know she’s full of shit. She’s lied on so many occasions,
I don’t even know where to begin. Heck, I think she’d be more
successful as a politician with her lies! Emma’s lies are shown by her
hypocrisy, by her (lack of ) commitment to fair-trade clothing, by her
shady education at Brown University, and by her ‘impoverished’
upbringing before Potter. Firstly, Emma’s upbringing was comfortable:
she went to one of the UK’s expensive schools (Dragon and Headington),
she went to fancy restaurants from a young age, and ffs, her parents
were lawyers working for firms like Ernst & Young. Don’t believe the BS she made about her birthday presents being pencil cases and uniforms. Secondly,
as I have already mentioned, Emma ain’t no champion of Fair-Trade
fashion in her private life. She’s been seen wearing labels that aren’t
labour friendly. Thirdly, how many times did her PR team post the news
she was returning to Brown University? Think about it…did she go back to
Brown after she finished filming for the Bling Ring? How did
she manage to graduate when she was hardly on campus, attending her
classes? How many times did she say she was going to graduate whenever
the question was prompted? She surely sounded uncertain about it. And
remember how the graduation list neglected to have her name on it? I
wonder why?? I mean, it’s not like she used an alias: she advertised her
presence with an entourage of gun-wielding security personnel. It
certainly makes you think about it…
Thank you!
This is great!
A more recent example of her slut-shaming was her “promotion” for the Bling Ring. Whereas in her HFS speech, she said she became a feminist at age 18, she was already what, 20 or 21 when she was blasting the crap out of her character during PROMOTION of the film.It is funny that she once claimed to not understand how her bra strap was supposed to show in the film. One, because if you can’t tell that that is part of your character, you shouldn’t act; and two, because Watson has worn such things in her personal time. She claimed her character wasn’t classy because of her tattoo.
I enjoyed this post. It’s all very accurate. Her publicity stunt with Brown should have been brought up more when she was supposedly attending it.
“For us personally, meeting Hermione Granger was like…. She’s transitioned out of that since, but not to us. She’s Hermione to us. I met her when she was really really young, she came to a Lakers game. but to see her there with my wife was pretty cool” -Kobe Bryant on meeting Emma at the Oscar’s
You’ll have a terrible haircut like that yet you won’t make it bushy for a bushy haired character you played.
Not to put a damper on this, but wasn’t Kobe Bryant accused of and charged with rape?
@headcanonsandmore – yes and yes, actually. The thing is that it came down to he said/she said and even after he was arrested and charged, the victim refused to testify, even though later she sued in civil court which was settled out of court, with an apology but no admittance of guilt.
Personally, I think he was able to buy his way out of it because of his wealth, and buy his wife’s allegiance back by the enormous rock on her finger a few months later.
Sorry to say but a man (or woman) having infidelity is a huge, gargantuan turn-off. It’s an actual squick on my part.
