My bitter gay ass does not like Rowling getting credit for making Charlie Weasley “basically ace”…when all she said at first was he didn’t get married. The interviewer then asked, “is he gay?” And she said, “no! No! He’s just more into dragons than women!!” (Even her answer that’s all about how he’s not super interested in women is determined to hetero wash the guy).

She never used the word asexual (except incorrectly when talking about Dumbledore). No intentional doors were opened. What she DID was create a barrier for HOW we could interpret Charlie’s singleness. Because God forbid a Weasley child be gay…and this is not in any way attacking the ace headcanons that came from that or saying it can’t be that way or that that perspective is #problematic. I’m all for it.

But I feel like what happened there, the reason it exists…is because Rowling dug her heels into heteronormativity, even in the ONe case she didn’t marry off a character to someone of the opposite gender. It’s important to acknowledge that and acknowledge the damage those statements can enact. People can take ownership of them however they like—but the intent has to be seen for what it is. The intent was microaggressive and ignorant. The intent deserves no credit for being progressive or even interesting.

And for me personally? It’s just…more satisfying to contradict her. Let Charlie be gay. (He can ALsO be ace, btw. Those aren’t mutually exclusive). Rowling heterosanitizing her story and accidentally maybe making some characters plausibly ace through that process is NOt canon rep, and no one needs to be pressured to uphold that concept if the alternative is more healing for them.

I guess Fandom has made me really cynical b/c… .well, having *a* character, even after the fact, as being acknowledged as Ace was, well, mindblowing for me. Having one, one single character, even if he’s mentioned, what, 4 times total in 7 books, as being Ace was desperately needed rep.

But having One character, even after the fact, changed my life and got me to see that Being Ace was fine, (especially Aro/Ace.) that having 1 character being Ace, even if it was an utterly accidental rep, was enormous. (I believe the term used nowadays is q*eerplatonic?)

What I see from fandom writing now is that
Harry? Gay or Bi.
Ron? Bi or Gay.
Ginny? Bi or Lesbian.
Luna? Lesbian or Pan.
Draco? Bi or Gay.
Hermione? Probably het (even if there are some who have H with a particular Slytherin witch)

All of that from the fandom.

(Oh and let’s say Bill? Bi or Pan. Percy? Gay. George? Bi or Gay. Fleur? Bi.)

Have at it but I’m keeping my Aro/Ace Charlie since that rep is, well, like finding a unicorn hair in the middle of the Forbidden Forest, or a real pot of galleons. That accidental rep was what I needed 10 years ago to find who I was – and so I would quit being bitter for decades about “being broken” and “something wrong with you” etc etc.

Thoughts, everyone?

Just wanna take a moment to give a shout-out to Ron Weasley, who was portrayed in DH2 as a automaton when Harry was saying he was going to give himself up to Voldemort. Because if that scene had been in the books, I can guarantee Hermione would NOT have been the only one to vocalize “I’ll go with you”. Ron was Harry’s best friend, but Harry was also Ron’s, and Ron would not have been quietly complacent in Harry’s sacrifice.

Ron at age 13 stood on a broken leg to put himself between Harry and a mass murderer, insisting to get to Harry he’d have to go through him.

At age 17 and with two working legs, I can only imagine he’d just carry Harry somewhere safe until he’d gotten the stupid idea out of his head.

That scene in DH2, though.

Like, Harry deliberately avoids Ron and Hermione when he’s going into the forest because he knows they wouldn’t let them go–he knows he couldn’t go if he spoke to them–he wouldn’t do that to them anyway, leave them knowing they hadn’t stopped him. There is literally no right way they could have written that scene, because there is no way Ron or Hermione lets Harry go into the forest. He talks to Neville because he needs to be sure someone will kill the snake, but he lies to Neville. Ron and Hermione would never have believed a lie, and he wouldn’t have been able to lie to them.

So f*** Ron’s reaction in that scene, but also, the plot could not proceed with an in-character Ron in that scene. That scene had no business anywhere in the story. There was no right way to do it.

Relationships are scary and complicated ONLY when you start thinking of your partner as some kind of adversary.

You know how to stop being scared of relationships? Remember that it’s got a goddamn buddy system *built in*. That’s all a relationship IS: “Let’s approach life with the buddy system.”

Check on your buddy. Make sure your buddy doesn’t forget their lunch box on the schoolbus. Hold hands with your buddy so you don’t get lost. If your buddy wants to look at the monkey cage, look at the goddamn monkey cage with them. If you are the one looking at the monkey cage, ask your buddy what they want to do next, and when they want to feed the giraffe, help them find a quarter for the little food dispenser. Be a good buddy, and if your buddy isn’t a good one too, tell the teacher and ask for a new one.

This isn’t fucking rocket science, people.

I have reblogged this before. I will reblog it again. And it’s not just romantic relationships: it’s family members and friends as well.

This kind of woke my ass up because of the amount of times I’ve had a buddy who didn’t check on me, didn’t want me to check on them, but didn’t want me to leave.

Harry Potter Worrying On Ron Weasley At The Battle Of The Department Of Mysteries.

THIS.

This is the moment I ship Harry x Ron harder than any canon couple.

Don’t get offended, I know Harry worried on everyone in the DoM and feels guilty he almost got them killed. All of them got injured and in a stressful situation. All of them are in their basic instincts: to survive.

Harry worrying on his platonic life partner in canon throughout the mess in the DoM Battle just made me screech why over and over again why they aren’t the endgame.

Then I got into a crying session on Sirius’s death scene.

it’s so hermione that the thing that finally gets her to drop everything and make out with ron is a token amount of respect for house elf lives

I wouldn’t really say it was token. Ron was the only person who remembered the house-elves were in danger too during the BoH (even Hermione, the founder of SPEW, forgot). When Ron did mention it, Hermione realised that there was no point hiding her feelings anymore, and snogged him.
