I’ve noticed a lot of double standards in how the fandom treats Ron and Hermione. And even tho I like Hermione it’s annoys the ever-loving crap outta me.
Like people will condemn Ron for making Hermione cry in the first book even though he never intended for her to hear him and was immediately regretful when she did when up until that point Hermione was doing all she could to annoy Ron and Harry and butt in on their business and generally be annoying and obnoxious enough that it took a life threatening situation to make them become friends, but when Hermione treats Luna, someone who has literally never done a damn thing to her, like utter crap, intentionally, to her face for something as petty as daring to disagree with Hermione’s way of thinking no one says a word.
People will call Ron insensitive for any minor indiscretion but when Hermione uses the death of Lavender’s beloved pet as a platform, while the poor girl is sobbing her heart out no less, to prove a point and let every know that she’s right or brushes away Ron’s legitimate concerns about Crookshanks targeting Scabbers, or takes away the nicest present Harry( who has canonically gotten a single tissue as a gift) has ever gotten without consulting him AT ALL, all I hear are crickets.
People will say the way Ron acts in response to Hermione and the Viktor situation is immature and possessive even tho in the case of the Yule Ball it’s only a shouting match and in the case of Hermione writing Viktor all Ron does is ask about it,( he doesn’t even say she should stop writing him, he’s just very disgruntled about it) but when Hermione literally resorts to physically attacking Ron because he’s going out with Lavender her reaction is ‘understandable and emotional’ instead of ‘violent and possessive’.
It’s a very frustrating and disturbing thing to see this double standard all over the fandom.
• Ron asking Hermione on a date to the library and Hermione declining, only because if she goes she knows she won’t end up paying attention to Ron and she doesn’t want to upset him
• So she tells him that and she says “oh, alright,” but secretly being upset because he really wanted to go because he likes watching Hermione read and seeing her face light up at all the different books
• Hermiome inviting Ron to her house for the summer one year and Arthur constantly owling Ron for information about Muggles until Hermione gets so fed up that she invites all the Weasley’s over, not intending for it to be a “meet the family,” until realizing that her and Ron’s parents are going to meet
• Ron freaking out about this fact until Hermione hugs him before his family arrives and says, “I don’t care what my parents think of your family because I think they’re wonderful. And actually, my parents think quite like me so they ought to agree.”
• The families meeting going entirely too well and the Grangers inviting the Weasley’s to stay with them next summer
• The Weasley’s accept, only when the Grangers agree to spend Christmas Holiday with them
• Ron being so excited that their families get on because it means that he’ll never have to worry about family issues with Hermione
• Hermione spending that Christmas with the Weasley’s (so do her parents) and then Ron deciding he wants to spend the rest of his Christmas’s and holidays and life with Hermione
• Hermione wanting the same thing so she writes about it in a journal that she doesn’t mean for Ron to find
• Hermione accidentally leaving the journal on Ron’s bed at the burrow one night when she spends the night in Ginny’s room for a “girls night”
• Ron finding the journal and being so excited that Hermione feels the same way that he goes to Mr. and Mrs. Granger that same night (it’s like 4:00 am at this point) and asking if he can marry their daughter
• The Grangers being so confused as to why this bloody red head woke them up for this question when he already knew what they’d say that they tell him no as a joke, and not saying anything about it for a few days
• Ron being the daft idiot he is (jk love Ron but seriously) believing that the Grangers really said no
• Ron being so upset that he stays in his room for days crying and hiding, how can he spend the rest of his life without his Mione
• Hermione being so worried and upset about Ron missing that she storms into his room mad, until she sees the love of her life laying on his bed crying, holding her journal and reading it to himself
• Hermione running over to him and hugging him hard, taking the journal from his hands and asking him why he’s crying when all she’s done in that journal is talked about how much she loves him
• Ron telling Hermione what happened and then saying that he was reading the journal over and over so he would know that she felt the same way about him, even if her parents didn’t
• Hermione being so pissed about the event that she goes to her parents who are sitting in the living room, talking with Molly and Arthur, and raising her voice to them because she is so beyond mad
• Hermione yelling, with tears down her face, “WHY WOULD YOU TELL RON HE COULDNT MARRY ME, HES BEEN NOTHING BUT GOOD AND KIND AND WONDERFUL TO ME AND YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE HIM AND CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW MUCH HE LOVES ME, WHY WOULD YOU EVER SAY HE COULDNT MARRY ME? HES THE ONLY MAN I WANT TO MARRY AND I KNOW THAT, I COULD MEET EVERY MAN ON THIS EARTH AND STILL ONLY WANT RON”
• Hermione’s parents staring at their screaming, crying daughter and bursting into laughter
• Hermione yelling again “WHY THE BLOODY HELL WOULD YOU LAUGH AT THAT?”
• Her parents explaining that they were joking as Ron runs down the stairs to grab his screaming girlfriend and pausing as they say they were joking
• Ron bursting into tears again, this time happy tears, and finishing his run to Hermione
• Ron picking her up and hugging her so hard and saying into her ear “I love you so much Mione,” and then looking at his parents with such pride and happiness and asking them if they approve of Hermione
• Arthur and Molly just laughing and saying “We’ve approved of sweet Hermione since the first owl you sent us calling her a mental lunatic dear”
• everyone in the room laughing and crying and Ron kissing Hermione with so much passion she forgets about all the suffering and all the hurt and pain they’ve ever been through
• after the even Ron plans to propose to Hermione
• He comes up with a plan and asks her again on a date to the library
• Hermione trying to say no again but Ron telling her he wants to watch her read because she’s beautiful when she does and she was reading when he first realized he loved her
• Hermione blushing and saying “oh fine you sap”
• Ron going to madam Pince and asking if she can hide the copy of “Hogwarts: a history” for the night so he can put a copy in its place, knowing it’ll be one of the books Hermione looks for
• as expected, 2 hours of reading and book browsing into the date Hermione walks over to where the book is and taking it off the shelf
• Hermione sighing and asking Ron “why haven’t you read this wonderful book?” And Ron asking her to read it to him
•So they take the book and sit down on a bench in the library and Hermione reading the first ten pages or so like a normal book, then turning the page to keep reading
• She starts to read the page but stops when she sees its Ron’s handwriting instead of the books print
• Ron asking if he can read that part to her and he reads the letter
• it’s a speech where Ron declares his love for Hermione and when he finishes, Hermione’s in tears and Ron is too
• Ron wipes Hermione’s tears away and telling her to turn the page
• Hermione does so and sees another bit of writing from Ron, followed by a flap of paper in the book
• Ron sliding off the bench and getting on one knee, propping the book on his knee and reading to her again
• “So Mione, now I ask you the most important question, more important that anything on the OWLS or NEWTS, more important than any test question ever. Will you, Hermione Jean Granger, make me the happiest git alive, and take my hand in marriage?”
•Hermione nodding with tears down her face as she fights the grin on her face
• Ron lifting the flap in the book and pulling out a ring from the hole he cut out of the pages
• Ron slipping the golden band with white diamonds onto Hermione’s ring finger and reads her the inscriptions
•the inside of the band says “wingardium leviOsa, flick and swish” and the outer band saying “for my mione”
I’m done. I’m done with people. Done with life. Done with Earth. I’m going to Mars. Don’t @ me.
More seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?
Have these people no bloody lick of sense?! We KNOW what Politician!Hermione is like: she’s Dolores Umbridge! Why can’t people understand things, damn it?
I remember there was a bit of drama and people got angry when @diva-gonzo and I started ranting on some confession saying that Hermione would’t be fit for being Minister of Magic – Diva compared her to the crumTrumpet while I preferred to compare her to Margaret Thatcher.
Hermione definitely has the ambition to rise to power but she doesn’t have the social skills to pull it off. Even with Ron supporting her and smoothing out the hurt feelings, she’s still too sharp and edgy to be put in such a position.
But LUNA? Free-spirited, no-care-in-the-world Luna, being seated in a boring office doing a desk job and being forced to hear Hermione ranting about her government?! Somebody call 911, I’m pretty sure that counts as torture, or at the very least attempted murder.
It greatly bothers me when, in fanfiction, you have Hermione and Luna being besties. Like… no. Have you not read Order of the Phoenix? Or Half-Blood Prince? Even during Deathly Hallows Hermione still shows signs of being short and exasperated with Luna. They’re not super-duper besties, they’re acquaintances. They can hold some conversation but they know they disagree on so many things that they don’t even try to push further.
AND SERIOUSLY SHAME ON THESE MONSTERS FOR WANTING TO COOP POOR, OUTDOORS-LOVING LUNA INSIDE A STUFFY OFFICE HAVING TO DEAL WITH HERMIONE’S INSUFFERABLENESS, HOW DARE THEY
This has to be a joke…
Hermione stans are unbelievable. And to make Luna suffer with Hermione? No no no! Leave Luna Lovegood alone, you nasties.
I have yet to understood how this ‘Luna and Hermione are besties’ thing came about. Canonically, Ron and Harry get along with Luna far better than Hermione does. Harry likes Luna because she gets him and vice versa. Ron finds Luna fascinating and enjoys her unique outlook on things. Hermione? Aside from Luna comforting her when she was crying in the girls toilets in HBP (a role that could have been easily filled by Ginny if it weren’t for plot convenience), the two are not that close.
Hermione and Luna are almost total opposites in virtually every way (and not in the ‘Ron and Hermione have personalities that are opposites but mesh well’ sort of way). As in, Luna and Hermione have totally different ways of seeing the world, and have different outlooks on life.
Also, let’s be real here; the only person who can actually handle Hermione being insufferable for long periods of time (on a one-to-one basis) is a really nice bloke called Ronald Bilius Weasley.
Hermione and Luna would drive each-other up the wall if they were stuck together too long.
Honest trailer guy (during the HP movie series trailer): Aaaand Rupert Grint’s dumb face.
Me (vibrating at a speed beyond understanding): ….. That’s a totally….not-wrong opinion to have. Why would I feel personally offended by that? That would be ridiculous…
Oh, you’ve seen that too? Did you also feel like throwing something when he called Emmione “perfect” and Ron “useless”? I mean, that’s what’s wrong with the movies, so the HT dude isn’t wrong…but still.
Oh yes, and I can tell you that I was suitably miffed. They even started the trailer by referring to the films as ‘for people too lazy to read’. The ironic is crushing...
I could just about forgive that (I mean, they clearly didn’t read the books much), but they honestly referred to Rupert as ‘dumb’-looking. And that just grinds my gears (especially when we’ve got ‘eyebrows’ Watson doing the Mexican wave with her forehead every five seconds)….
Also, for the FBAWTFT trailer, they referred to Emma as ‘too famous nowadays’ and referred to Rupert as ‘where is Ron anyway?’.
Like, the internet does exist, you know? Why does the American media have such a complete blind-spot about Rupert Grint’s post-HP career? The man’s been on broadway, started producing his own shows, has two series going simultaneously, and will be on a BBC adaptation of Poirot. But according to the US media, he’s been unemployed since Potter. Jerks.
Sure, Emma’s well-known, but she’s barely been in anything at all. Her average work schedule is maybe one film in two/three years. And most of the films she’s in aren’t even that good. With Dan, you can at least make the argument that his not-so-good films are interestingly bad; Emma’s misses are just boring and dull.
Also, if Emma is the definition of “famous”, I’m glad Rupert’s doing his own thing (and not starring in live-action remakes of Disney animated films that just coast on nostalgia for film!Hermione).
Sorry that I went on a rant here, but this has always irritated me about the media’s treatment of Rupert.
Rant all you want. Even I’m sick of people sleeping on Rupert’s talent, and Eyebrows getting the praise that she does not deserve. Although, watch the BATB honest trailer, if you haven’t already. They made fun of Emma and it felt good.
Glad we’re in one mind about this! I’ve never understood why Rupert’s talents have been ignored for so long. I mean, Emma’s not a straight-up terrible actor, but it’s like… she’s waaaay outclassed when you compare her to Rupert. Which makes me wonder why so many people hyped her up during the HP films when Rupert wasright there all the time.
Just watched it;
I’ll give them points for pointing out how badly her singing was. (I can’t hold a tune in a bucket, and even I know that auto-tune was the only way they could make that palatable, and even that it didn’t work).
But….did they seriously just call Rupert ‘ugly’ again? Dang it, Honest Trailers, I gave you a second chance!
Do they seriously expect me to agree that this man
is ugly?
Nah, mate.
Don’t @ me, Emma fans.
Oh my God.
I completely forgot about that. I shouldn’t have told you to watch it. I’m so sorry!
@ronandhappiness Hey, it’s not your fault. You weren’t to know. Don’t beat yourself up about it. 🙂
And it did give me a good excuse to put a pic of Rupert being gorgeous in this thread.
