I am wondering why you seem to think that Ginny and the other Weasley’s knew that Ron was holding out for Hermione? There’s no indication in the text to support that I feel, nor that they knew exactly what his insecurities about being unwanted were. Only Harry has an idea about R/Hr & Ron’s feelings, cause he spent all his time with them & even he wasn’t certain of R/Hr. Plot point of course but only Ron’s friends got to stay and visit over the holidays so maybe they thought he was a fave.

Hmm. Good point. I always thought it was known to virtually all the Weasley siblings that Ron fancied Hermione, but I suppose that might be just an expectation gained from fanfiction and fanon, as opposed to canon.

Within the books, none of Ron’s siblings really make it crystal-clear that they were aware of Ron’s feelings for Hermione. However, that might be due to the fact that Harry rarely (especially after POA) spends time hanging around with the other Weasley siblings without Hermione round at the same time. True, he does hang around Ginny a fair amount in OOTP and even more so after they start dating. But, by that point, Ron and Hermione were already becoming more obvious in their feelings. Ron’s siblings never really pass comments on the matter, because they would hardly do that in front of Hermione.

Personally, I think that none of Ron’s siblings (except possibly Bill and Charlie) thought that Ron suffered from insecurities. In-canon, Harry is virtually the only person who really knows the full extent of Ron’s insecurities, because of the horcrux locket. Hermione understands Ron’s insecurities to a certain extent, in that (in GOF) she points out that Ron feels overshadowed compared to his brothers. However, I don’t think Hermione grasped that Ron believed he was loved the least by his mother.

I’ve actually got a fanfic in the works that deals with that topic, funnily enough.

Thanks for the ask, anon! Hope that answers your question!

I think that of all the Weasley siblings, Fred, George and Ginny were the ones who had zero clue about Ron’s insecurities.

Fred wasn’t a great big bro, to be honest. He’s the one who caused Ron’s arachnophobia, killed his pet Puffskein during “Bludger practice”, apparently arranged the whole Unbreakable Vow thing and gave his little brother a candy that burned a hole directly through his tongue. All that in the span of a decade.
I hate to say that, because I like the twins, they’re funny, but Fred is really a rubbish big brother and he’s super cruel. I think he just didn’t realize how horrible he could act. Definitely lacked compassion and empathy.

George I see picking up on Ron’s feelings for Hermione, but being blind to his insecurities. George is the kinder of the twins, which means he must be more empathetic than Fred, so I assume he’d notice his little brother’s feelings for Hermione before the Yule Brawl confirms them. But I think he wouldn’t know how much the “taking of the mickey” affects Ron’s self-esteem.

Ginny, I feel, wouldn’t know the least bit about Ron’s insecurities because he’d be hiding them twice as hard around her – he’d want to appear like her cool big brother who can protect her. Which is why he kind of lets her walk all over him without too much protesting, because he lets her think he’s fine and it’s all in good fun when in fact he’s NOT fine at all.
Ginny would know that Ron crushes on Hermione badly, but I don’t think Hermione would have gone so far as to admit her crush on Ron to his little sister. I think Hermione told her about the whole Krum thing and said “but keep it mum around Ron or else I’ll never hear the end of it, you know how ridiculous he gets” and Ginny just assumed that Hermione mostly wanted to spare Ron’s ‘unrequited’ feelings. That, until HBP happened and everyone switched into “teenage drama” mode.

Funny thing is that I think Percy could relate the most to Ron’s insecurities because Percy too feels like the black sheep of the family sometimes (only he knows that his mother loves him at least). I’m positive that this letter he sent in OoTP was his attempt to encourage Ron to be his own person, but it came accross as a little too… eh… prattish.
Maybe he noticed the uncanny resemblance between Ron and Hermione and his parents, like Harry did, and had a sneaking suspicion that Ron had at least a soft spot for Hermione.

Charlie and Bill are kind of too old and too far away to see much happening with their little bro, honestly… They probably saw Ron and Hermione dancing at Bill’s wedding and were like “oh, they grow up so fast” before all hell broke loose. Then Bill would be able to completely confirm that Ron is in deep when he arrives at Shell Cottage all battered up and bruised and crying his eyes out one morning in November…

Ginny had no right to make fun of him in front of his friends. You don’t do that. At home, my siblings can torture me as much as they like, but never in front of my friends. That’s just cruel and unacceptable. Ginny being aware or unaware of Ron’s crush on Hermione is irrelevant.

Interesting ideas @vivithefolle and @ronandhappiness; thanks for your thoughts! 🙂

Ron Weasley and His Insecurities Headcanons:

exolovelovelove:

  • He’s not really a messy eater. He just got messy to get Molly’s attention, sometimes Arthur’s attention too, because she always pays attention to Ginny or to the Twins shenanigans during meal times so they can have a peaceful mealtime. Molly gave up scolding him after two months and Ron felt hurt since attention is still attention whether positive or negative. That’s why he’s jealous of Harry’s fame due to the attention and you better stop calling him a pig Hermione.
  • He did not realized he’s stress eating already to fill ‘an empty feeling’. Molly’s food is really good along with his siblings’ secret stash of sweets and the occasional chocolate frogs from Arthur when gets home from work.
  • He quickly learnt to pile his food since in a Weasley Household it’s survival of the fittest during mealtimes after Percy told him so while shoving food on his plate then to Ron’s before giving it to Molly so she could feed Ginny.
  • He likes to bite his nails, whenever he does this Molly’s reminded to cut his nails. He still bites his nails occasionally at Hogwarts.
  • He also developed a habit of biting his lips whether it is upper or lower lip.
  • He scratches his head and massage his nape too. He also stomps on his foot sometimes.
  • Clenching his knuckles, getting red in the face, feet going on a stable position Charlie taught him, tucking his stomach in, and lightly biting his tongue when he’s angry and defensive.
  • He heard the twins and Charlie cursing, they told him he’s not allowed to curse since he’s not cool (the twins) and is still young (Charlie). The first time Ron cursed it felt good because he thinks it’s cool and it’s nice to be not so nice every time, it also lift a heavy feeling from in him and he does not understand but it’s nice.
  • Ron does not like spiders, in fact he’s absolutely terrified of them. It does not only remind him of Fred’s punishment for him breaking Fred’s toy broom, it reminds him of his first failure to keep his promise to himself to only take out the toy broom for a spin then put it back Fred’s toy chest not broken. In short, they remind him of his first failure to keep a promise. That’s why he’s desperately trying to go back to Harry and Hermione, something died in him when he’s 3 years old and if something happened to the two of them it will break him despite wanting to go back to his family.
  • Ron has a puffskein, his first ever responsibility and first pet and first not-a-hand-me-down. Arthur gifted him the puffskein because he wanted a puppy even if he knows he could not have one. He absolutely loved it and took care of it really well that the twins took it from him and used it as beater practice without informing him. He just found his puffskein dead in the morning outside of the Burrow and he got traumatized that he let his child pet die. That’s why he’s protective of Scabbers, Hermione you righteous prat.
  • He fears he’ll be left behind and be the black sheep of the family. His father is the Head of his department before he was even born, his mother is an amazing woman who kept them in line and can raise hell, Bill is the poster child and good at everything and he protects him from the twins pranks, Charlie is the greatest of all his siblings, Percy is the smart one and is destined for great things since Molly told him so, the twins got each other and despite things Molly always got her attention on them and they bring smiles to people, Ginny is the only girl for 7 generations and she’s perfect and their princess and always got new albeit secondhand clothes and not a hand me down, Harry is the boy who lived and you know who’s slayer and Gryffindor’s pride, and Hermione’s the brightest witch of her age and is generally amazing so… what is he? People automatically assume he’s the sidekick, he’s the unpopular of the golden trio, and he’s the golden boy’s shadow but he does not want to be those things. He wants to be a hero too.
  • He hates being poor as he feels his family deserve every good thing in the world along with the other poor families. He hates not being enough and can’t give some help.
  • He always want to please everyone even if sometimes he wants to piss off certain someones.
  • He got his heart on his sleeve. That’s why he’s so affected by the Horcrux despite blood loss and almost 24/7/365 with another horcrux for 7 years (Harry Potter).

Fell free to add more guys.

Is Rowling really trying to convince me that Ron haven’t seen Harry shirtless???

I did also wonder about that. Didn’t they share a dorm for six years?

@headcanonsandmore Well it ranks right up there with the epilogue and why the kids would have no clue who their father was… one of them was already at hogwarts, it made no sense.

@weasleymama Maybe Ron meant it as a joke? Like, he knew that the tattoo wasn’t there (as he shared a room with Harry), but also wanted it clear to everyone-else (including Hermione) that Ginny was just messing around.

Also, I think that ‘pygmy puff’ joke really got to Ron. Why else would he bring it up so long after the fact? It ties into his feelings of inadequacy when compared to Harry, which the Horcrux locket later brought to the surface.

I would have liked to see a few more positive interactions between Ron and Ginny. I always thought they must have been close growing up, being the youngest and so close in age, but it seems most of their direct interactions are kind of negative. I also would have liked to see Hermione and Ginny interact more. All of that seemed to happen mostly off-page, but we know they were close.

Ron and Ginny were fairly close during the first five books. It’s never really explained why their relationship went sour, but I think JK Rowling used Ginny in HBP to kick Ron’s self-esteem into the dirt. Which is weird, considering how close their relationship was up til that point. Sure, before that, they bickered a little, but in HBP, Ginny seems to take genuine pleasure in taking potshots at Ron’s insecurities (often in front of the person Ron was in love with; something Ron never did when Ginny was crushing on Harry).

@jaggedjaguy Reverse psychology? How is Ginny taking potshots at Ron’s insecurities ‘reverse psychology’? Yes, Ron could be over-protective at times, but that’s hardly surprising considering she almost died in her first year. It’s understandable that she got tired of how protective he was, but she didn’t have to publicly insult him so often for no apparent reason. That’s just punishing him beyond his crime. Also, I’m pretty sure he never referred to her as his ‘baby sister’.
