hello i’m new to your blog and really love your analysis of ron and other characters on here. I was wondering what you think about fantastic beasts, the characters and the new controversy.

hillnerd:

Aww thanks so much! 😀 I definitely enjoy overanalyzing the books to death, especially surrounding Ron and how people view him. RON IS MY DARLING, and I must defend! 😛

As for the new HP movies….

So, these movies don’t mean that much to me. I like some of the new characters (the main four) and am in LOVE with nifflers- but I really only like the following elements:

  • Queenie/Jacob (and the drama of forbidden disclosure of magical beings to muggles)
  • seeing the cute/interesting animals loose in new york (including the wand polishing elves)
  • Newt Scamander being a sweetie
  • the costumes/set design
  • the MACUSA,
  • Percival Graves (when I thought he was just an inspector)
  • the little every day magical stuff (like baking, clothes changing etc)

beyond that, I hated or didn’t like:

  •  the weird anti-magic muggle lady and her religious children’s home thing
  • I hated the weird political family
  • I hated the Grunewald reveal and his costume design
  • Also why is Depp cast as a British villain? Like, are they out of British actors? Hell- Paul Bettany would have been a great choice for a blonde psychopath.
  • I didn’t much care for the obscurus plot
  • I don’t much care for Tina Goldstein
  • I super didn’t like that weirdo Credence
  • I hated how few POC people are in HARLEM NEW YORK- like WHAT?

So, while I’ll still see the new movie (I love me some Jude Law- and want to see more Queenie/Jacob, animals, and Newt being a sweet bean, costumes, and magic spells)- I honestly am not very invested.

As for the new controversy about Nagini. I can’t weigh in until I’ve seen how it’s all treated, to be honest. I get that the optics aren’t good from a certain perspective- and from another it’s a really adorable asian actress getting an opportunity to be in a huge franchise. The actress is really excited about getting this role- so I hope people don’t ruin this for her.

The HP series definitely has an issue when it comes to inclusivity – so I’m hoping this is treated well and ends up being a powerful and interesting story line. I understand why people are angry- and I understand why people are angry at the angry people.

I am not emotional one way or the other about it- at this point I’m just curious to see how it all pans out, and wary that it’ll not be an enjoyable film.

Also I’m hoping they make is VERY clear that Dumbledore is Gay. That would be great.

American baking shows: I’M NOT HERE TO MAKE FRIENDS I’M JUST HERE TO CONQUER AND DESTROY

British baking shows:

I JUST WANT AMERICAN SHOWS TO CAST LIKE THIS.

Don’t cast horrible people who are mean and ‘competitive’ but actually just aholes- cast sweeties with talent. And have cute little string music playing, and real challenges instead of BS ones, and have nice judges.

I WANT ALL SHOWS TO BE BRITISH BAKE OFF.

Wait; American shows really cast people like that? That seems so counter-intuitive, since you want the audience to root for them. I don’t watch Bake Off, but I fully support how wholesome it is.

hillnerd:

Oh wow!

I just got this ‘review’ on ff.net regarding my Won Won the Wonderful story, and boy oh boy…..

“Will the story is interesting , the idea is wrong . Ron is a berk who after he accepted Hermione invitation at slughorn party he trow himself in lavender arms only to hurt hermione because she kissed or was kissed by krum 2 years ago after a ball he did everthing he could to ruin for hermione . Ron is an imature , jelous git with the emotional range of a teaspon who never deserved hermione after he treat her trough the 7 books .

  my response:

“Dude… Wow, no. I just… Like, you can debate whether Ron dated Lavender purely to make Hermione jealous or not- that’s never clearly outlined in the books and is left to interpretation- but to say he ‘did everything he could to ruin the ball for Hermione’, that he’s nothing more than a ‘jelous git’, ‘never deserved Hermione’ and act as if he treated her poorly throughout the books? Naw.

You don’t understand the character of Ron at all, the dynamics of Romione, or Hermione. I don’t even have the wherewithal to debate this comment right now. I’ll just say:
1) He engages Hermione when others will not (she’s argumentative an ignored by almost everyone)
2) he is more than deserving of Hermione- because he’s brave, self-sacrificing, kind, caring, funny, smart and makes her happy/grounds her
3) he’s one of the most emotionally interesting characters in the books with a lot more nuance than you are giving him credit for
4) Ron is an amazing character who deserves respect”

IN MY HOUSE?!

Anons are weird, @hillnerd. I once got an anon comment on a Ron fanfic that said (and I quote) ‘Ron Weasley is the Donald Trump of the Harry Potter universe’. Some people just like spewing hate.

hillnerd:

So I came across this post but on my dash it said the OP was deactivated. I’ve been burnt before by donating what little money I have to things that turned out not to be legit.

I checked in the notes to see if there was a comment about it, but saw nothing. So I asked in the comments-

Then I got this:

I want to make sure- was what I said super out of line? Like, is this a cultural thing, or am I just being obtuse? I never want to hurt anyone, and I’m concerned now.

Rest of convo:

hillyminne: I was going to send money if it was revealed this was legit. There have been a lot of posts of people in need who turned out weren’t legit- thus I was checking up- as I only want to give to people who are in need. I am disabled, so only have so much money for charity. I’ve donated to a few really heartrending stories, that people later revealed were scams and on my tumblr thing it said the OP’s account was deactivated

ch4rg3b0lt I’m not forcing anyone to donate, I’m well aware that people have only so much funds as they can afford. But you implied I was being a scam in a post that was a call for help for a desperate situation. You know, there’s a thing that’s called “check the notes for the source"And you would have seen that I only changed my URL. I’m not a fucking thief, thanks for saying otherwise tho!

hillyminne I did- there was nothing that said anything about it that I could find. and I’m not very tech savvy. I never said you were a thief. I was making sure I was donating to a real person, and not another scam. I hope things go well for you. I don’t understand why you’re cursing at me like this

ch4rg3b0ltBecause you were incredibly rude yourself! Have a good fucking day

Then blocked me

Was I being rude? I am so anxious now I feel sick

@hillnerd You didn’t come across as rude. Not sure why that person got so angry, since you made it clear that you were interested in donating but didn’t want to be scammed again. Their cursing was also very rude, especially since you were so polite in your responses.

How long was Ron camping before he left the trio

hillnerd:

I decided to do some digging in the books to make out the timeline on when Ron left Harry and Hermione in Deathly Hallows.

It was mid October at bare minimum when he left them. We know this, because of Dirk Cresswell.

The night Ron leaves Harry and Hermione, they are listening in on Dirk, Ted, the Goblins and Dean. Dirk mentions he was caught and on his way to azkaban when he escaped, and has been on the lamb since for 6 or 7 weeks.

Let’s look at the Dirk Cresswell timeline:

September 2nd- Runcorn has recently told the ministry about Cresswell’s Muggle lineage, and this news is all around the ministry. *

The Night Ron leaves- Cresswell tells the group of how he was caught and escaped. He was ‘halfway to azkaban’ when he stunned Dawlish and stole his broom. He has been on the run since this escape for 6 or 7 weeks. **

So, at minimum, the trio have been camping for 6-7 weeks when Ron leaves.

The thing is, we don’t know Cresswell’s timeline between being outed by Runcorn, being caught, and then escaping from Dawlish.

On September 2nd no one says Cresswell has been captured/arrested or otherwise. We only know that Runcorn has reported Cresswell, and everyone at the ministry knows about it.

Cresswell could have immediately been ‘caught’ as soon as Runcorn reported him. That would also mean he would escape basically that same day (since wizarding transport times seem to be rather immediate.) No one mentions him escaping from Dawlish at the ministry.

This makes me think Cresswell was on the run for a bit (at minimum, hours, at maximum, a few weeks) before he was ‘caught’ and Dawlish escorted him to Azkaban.

So at minimum, Cresswell was immediately caught and escaped Dawlish- and has only been on the run altogether 6-7 weeks.

That would put Ron’s leaving, at absolute minimum, around Oct 14th or 21st.

At maximum, Cresswell was on the run for up to 5 weeks before his capture and sequential escape. Ron left when it was still fall, so he could not have left after Dec 1st, and Cresswell would not have escape Dawlish any later than Oct 19th.

If Ron left on Oct 14th or 21st, he would have been gone a full two months or more on Dec 26th (the day he is reunited with Harry and Hermione.)

Ron is mentioned as being gone for weeks. Weeks, not months. Hermione said Ron was gone for ‘weeks and weeks’, and it is mentioned later he was gone only weeks- not months. ***

In order for him not to have been gone for months instead of weeks, Ron would have had to leave them at bare minimum Oct 27th in order to JUST be under 2 months (by literally one day.) If I were mad and yelling at someone for leaving, I’d round up to two months at that.

So I think it’s more realistic to say he left in November, most likely a few weeks in, in order for  He’s been gone since well before Dec 1st because winter begins that day, and it’s still autumn when he leaves. In order for there to be weeks, not months, of his absence, and for it to still vibe with what Cresswell said- he’d be leaving them in November, and be gone 7 weeks or less.

In conclusion, I believe Ron left them some time between October 31st and November 15th.

He was gone from 4-7 weeks.

Thanks for the tag. @hillnerd. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out a way to do the challenge and add the audio to tumblr, since my laptop won’t record in MP3 and that’s the only file format tumblr accepts.

So, here’s my solution.

Headcanons-and-more

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Pronounce the following words: aunt (aw-nt), roof (r-oo-f), route (rouwt), theater (the-at-er), iron (i-ern), salmon (sa-mon), caramel (car-a-mel), fire (fiy-er), water (wa-ter), New Orleans (New Or-leans), Pecan (Pec-an), both (bowth), again (ag-ain), probably (prob-ab-ly), Alabama (Ala-bama), lawyer (loy-er), coupon (coo-pon), mayonnaise (may-on-aise), pajamas (pu-jam-as), caught (cawt), naturally (natch-ur-ally), aluminum aluminium (aluminium),  GIF (G-if), Tumblr (Tum-bler), Crackerjack (Cracker-jack), doorknob (door-nob), envelope, (on-vel-ope), and GPOY (Gee-Pee-Oh-Why/ GPOY).

Toilet-papering? I dunno.

Pop but I also call it fizzy drinks.

Plimsolls.

Grandma and Granddad.

Shopping Trolley.

Remote. But someone I know calls it ‘the donger’ (pronounced ‘dong-er’)

(Can’t do the passage thing this way. Will take too long)

Yes. I have a general British English accent, with no real regional variations.

Wizard. Vampires seem to have such a miserable existence.

No. Most people I know on Tumblr live in North America, mainland Europe, or other parts of the UK that are really far from me.

Blubber (Blub-er), Ointment (Oint-ment), and Tweet (Tweat).

What’s your opinion on the life expectancy of wizards? I think it’s said somewhere that the average is around 140 years? But then there’s the odd ones like (movie-verse) Barry Winkle and Armando Dippet, that lived for several centuries without the help of the philosopher’s stone like the Flamels

hillnerd:

To be honest the books leave a lot to be desired when it comes to consistency on things like this. JKR is always bemoaning how ‘bad at maths’ she is, and this, I feel, might be a victim of that.

In one interview, she said Dumbledore is 150 and McGonagall 70. But then later, in book 7, his age is revealed, and he was 116 when he died. She’s not even sure of her own characters ages by gaps of 34 years- thus this makes it harder for there to be a firm theory on this.

I don’t count movie-verse to be very accurate with things either. I mean, the amount of details they get wrong when it comes to even major points is astounding- so something as small as a mention on a news paper of birthdates… I don’t count it as canon. It can be fun to use it to lend to a diverse headcanon though.

So what’s a fandom to do? I think the best way to look at this is get to the heart of what the author was trying to portray. She definitely has wizards able to be very active and tough well into their hundreds. We see this with Dumbledore at 116, McG at 70+/-, Voldemort at 70+/-, a variety of older witches and wizards with grey or white hair, and (by muggle standards) middle-aged witches and wizards being fierce warriors doing a lot of physically demanding stuff.

In the books we don’t get to see anyone living to a ripe old age and dying naturally. Everyone we know of is struck down by violence, or disease. 😦

It seems that wizards live a bit longer if they are more powerful,  from what we’ve seen hinted at, unless they meet an untimely demise.

An odd thing we see is that a lot of wizards get married and have children at very young ages, despite the supposed longevity they will experience. In the end, you can just write this all off as ‘bah, wizard culture is weird.’

So, all that said, I headcanon the following age equivalencies

Age 0-35 you age the same as a regular human.

35-65 more of a stasis at an average around like age 45

65-85 somewhere between 55 and 65 stasis

85-110 somewhere between 75 stasis

110-150 somewhere between 85 stasis

The exceptions are those who are particularly powerful- in which case they stasis around age 45-55 healthwise for much much longer.

At least, that’s how I think of it. 😛
